When the internal bleeding started, Ellen Pulhamus figured she might die soon. Then the 60- year-old Denver woman got the call she believes gave her the gift of time. A biopsy of the tumors from Pulhamus' lung cancer, which had spread to her abdomen, found a very specific rearrangement of genes inside the cancer cells. She was eligible to join a clinical trial at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, testing a drug made to target her particular gene mutation.
