'Hedgehog' Pathway May Hold Key To Anti-Cancer Therapy

Scientists in Switzerland have discovered a way to block the growth of human colon cancer cells, preventing the disease from reaching advanced stages and the development of liver metastases. The research, published in EMBO Molecular Medicine, shows that blocking the so-called Hedgehog-GLI pathway can prevent the growth of tumours, metastatic lesions and cancer stem cells, the cells thought to lie at the root of cancer growth.

Vectibix Significantly Improved Progression-Free Survival In Second-Line Treatment Of KRAS Wild-type Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

Amgen announced positive top-line results from a Phase 3 trial evaluating Vectibix (panitumumab) in combination with FOLFIRI (an irinotecan-based chemotherapy) as a second-line treatment in 1,186 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Study Data From National Cancer Center, Department Of Surgical Oncology Update Knowledge Of Colon Cancer Prognosis

Scientists discuss in 'Factors influencing survival after complete resection of pulmonary metastases from colorectal cancer' new findings in colon cancer. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the efficacy of complete (R0) resection for pulmonary metastases of colorectal carcinoma, and to clarify prognostic factors for survival that could be used to identify patients likely to benefit most from pulmonary resection.

Genetic Testing May Be Valuable In Treating Colorectal Cancer

For the 29,000 patients in the United States with metastatic colorectal cancer, chemotherapy with irinotecan is a standard treatment that has been shown to improve survival. But for more than one in 10 of these patients, a variation in their DNA means that this treatment could result in a severe reduction in their white blood cell count, leading to a high risk of bacterial infection and possible subsequent death.
