Fifteen percent of lung cancer cases occur in never-smokers and show characteristics that are molecularly and clinically distinct from those in smokers. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutations, which are correlated with sensitivity to EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs), are more frequent in never-smoker lung cancers, scientists writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America report.
According to recent research published in the journal Human Pathology, Recently, the fusion gene EML4-ALK was identified in non-small cell lung carcinoma, which could be a potential therapeutic target. We investigated the prevalence of anaplastic lymphoma kinase protein expression in these tumors by immunohistochemistry and correlated the results with data from ALK molecular studies.

Most cancer-related deaths are caused by metastases. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) that spread via the bloodstream to distant sites are presumed to be the cause of these lethal tumors. Circulating tumor cell detection and characterization could provide a valuable tool for stratifying cancer patients and aiding with individualized treatment strategies.

Research published in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology has found that narrow-band imaging bronchoscopy increases the specificity of bronchoscopic early lung cancer detection and can serve as an alternative detection device (see also International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer).
Four non-small-cell lung cancer (NS CLC) registration trials were utilized to develop models linking survival to risk factors and changes in tumor size during treatment. The purpose was to leverage existing quantitative knowledge to facilitate future development of anti-NSCLC drugs, scientists writing in the journal Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics report.
