Cancer Compass accepts ad revenue from the NCPA

On the home page of this website you will find a prominently placed advertisement for a petition, sponsored by the National Center for Policy Analysis, a non-profit conservative think tank funded by the insurance industry. The petition is an anti-health care reform advertisement. I personally feel this is inappropriate for this kind of website and I question where the directors of Cancer Compass place their loyalty, with the insurance industry or with patients and caregivers? As a caregiver who regularly contributes to the Brain Cancer forum on this site, my concerns beyond health issues are with securing health care for my wife. Right now lots of us are suffering due to the lack of health care, and pre-existing conditions are discriminated against for those who lose their insurance due to job loss, often the result of falling ill. Survivors can be left with no coverage, facing poverty because they fought to live.We live in the richest democracy on Earth, the fact that we are being discriminated against in this fashion when it comes to the most important asset we have, our health is an outrage and must change NOW.I see this advertisement by the NCPA as anti-reform, which it is. If your view agrees with the NCPA, so be it, but it's partisan presence has no place on a website dedicated to patients and their caregivers in my humble opinion. Where does Cancer Compass stand?

I called to get help for my father who is dying from brain cancer. The person I talked to told me that since he has Medicare, it would cost too much money for him to go there. She was rude and un caring - nothing like those fake commercials they have on television. Has anyone else had that experience?

Avastin for Brain Tumor - outpatient only ?!?

Hi everyone, my husband is currently in very bad situation. Brain stem tumor recurrence, progressing with more enhancement and was admitted to major cancer center in NYC for 2 1/2 weeks. During this time, they sought to get approval for Avastin and were denied. What?!? My husband is not well enough to be at home. They informed us that Avastin is only covered if the patient is at home and going to outpatient clinic. He was discharged to home and we arranged 24/7 home aide, and next day taken by ambulance to local ER after sudden edema caused falling and slurred speech. Tomorrow supposed to be transported back to NYC. Is this true about Avastin? Is there any way around this? He has Medicare primary plus another secondary. Thank you.

with all the layoffs and such, I'm covered under my husband's policy at work, here is my question: If my husband gets laid off or takes another job does the new insurance company have to cover me or do they still claim a pre-existing condition for me? I was told that they have possible changed the coverage and have to cover me. Thanks for any info on this. Susan

ending employer insurance, COBRA not available

I have a friend who has been battling brain cancer for about 4 years. She has been undergoing chemotherapy but was recently informed by her doctor that that cancer has spread to such an extent that she ought to quit her job and enjoy what time she has left to her.She would like to take the advice to heart, but quitting would mean being removed from her employer's insurance program and apparently her employer is not large enough to offer COBRA benefits so that she can continue with her insurance. Apparently she can apply for disability but would not be eligible for those benefits for two years. If she used her own money to pay for care from now on she'd likely exhaust her savings in a few months if not sooner. Can anyone point me in the direction of help or advice on what her insurance options might be?Thanks,Matt

Lack of insurance (General)

I have prostate cancer and I have been posting on that board but decided to come over here and what I am reading is shocking but hardly surprising. We face in this nation a health care system that is so broken that without significant changes, the heartbreak stories will become even more prevalant. You have all heard the number---50 million Americans uninsured but its even worse than that. There are countless millions on top of that who have inadequate insurance. And try to buy insurance with a pre-existing condition. Each state does have at least one plan that one must convert from another another plan within 60 days to be covered and (walah!) all pre-existing conditions are covered. However, the downside is the cost (ranges between $7,000-$14,000 per annum per individual AND its not the best plan money can buy). Other plans may be offered at similar costs that don't require 60 day rollover but the pre-existing conditions don't begin to be covered for a period of 12-18 months. We desperatly need national health care. While President Obama has certainly put this (thankfully) at the TOP of his agenda, in recent weeks, he has begun to waffle around a bit inorder to make any plan more acceptable to the far right. I truly believe that the costs of national health care can be contained if the ENTIRE medical system is changed, which would include limiting law suits (Obama is leaning in that direction). Furthermore, a uniform plan would ease the spiralling costs to employers and would more than compensate for any possible tax increases.I know many of us are prsentently ill and many of us are being confronted right now by this issue. However, a few well written words to your congressperson and senators (especially if they are Republican) can never hurt. We have to let our leaders know that our lives depend on quality and affordable health care. Furthermore, a national heath care program would allow our American companies to lower/stabilze these huge costs and make our products more competitive. President Obama knows this---we need all of our leaders to know this. This is NOT a political advertisement.I am just an individual who is fed up with a system where only the rich and the very poor (and that is ebbing downward as Medicaid funding continues to narrow) can obtain quality health care. Sincerely, Joe

SSDI/Insurance?

Since my DH was diagnosed with PC in 7/08 he has been able to work fulltime missing only a few days here and there after each treatment. Recently he has had feet pain due to neuropathy and edema that have made it increasingly more difficult for him to work. We checked into his getting on SSDI (disability) but they won't even consider him since he's working. If he quits his job he'll have no insurance and it could take up to 5 mos. to even get a check once he's declared eligible. And, from what we're told, it could take up to 2 yrs to get Medicaid/Medicare; therefore, he'd had to pay for his own insurance, which could cost up to $1000 per month and he'd only be getting $1400 per month SSDI.So...my question is what is one to do? Work until you literally drop dead or quit and lose everything you've worked hard for all your life?I work but don't make that much. I'm just a receptionist/secretary

new here

I am trying to help my sister who has a glioblastoma brain tumor. She had surgery to remove one in Dec. 2007. She was treated with tamadar. Almost one year to the date, another tumor returned. Now, her options are treatment with CPT11 and Avastin. The financial adviser at the oncologist office said the insurance company will probably deny these drugs as they are not FDA approved but the best treatment for this type cancer. She said after the insurance denies, the drug manufacturers will give the drug free. They have insurance, both retired but sister is not old enough for Medicare. They have a farm and home and have been wise with their money all their lives. Still, the cost of each treatment, which will be two a month, is around $10,000. She is hesitant to seek the treatment for fear of building up a large bill her husband will have to pay. She said the cost compared to the short time it will buy is not worth it. Any ideas? Anyone else been through this? Ruby
