The Battle

The Battle
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which cancerous cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the body's internal organs. There are two main types of mesothelioma; pleural, which involves the sac that covers the pleural cavity around the lungs and peritoneal, which involves the tissue that covers the abdominal area. Mesothelioma has been said to be caused by Asbestos. Rhio O’Connor was diagnosed with this lethal disease and given just a few months to live. Rhio rejected the idea of letting this health challenge easily beat him and through his determination, went on to live for 7 ½ more years. He worked with professional clinicians by forming a regimen of over 100 supplements a day, changing his diet, and practicing mind-body medicine. Rhio’s story is inspiring because he has shown people that even in the worst of cases, sometimes modern medicine isn’t the only way to go and there is always hope. You just have to have the determination and believe in yourself to meet the challenge.
If I were faced with the same challenges that Rhio faced, I would do everything it took, just like he did, to find a better road ahead. I am also a strong believer in alternative medicine. From the time I was little, my family has practiced homeopathic medicine. Even when it comes to the flu, there are healthy ways of getting better faster. I’ve had people in my family come through mild forms of cancer using modern medicine superbly, but I’ve also had people in my family come through just fine using alternative medicine. The question of “Which is better?” has always been a popularly debated question.
Having my best friend go through thyroid cancer her freshman year of college and choosing alternative medicine has given me so much insight into what a person goes through on a daily basis when practicing alternative medicine. . Out of hundreds of options, she decided to use the Gerson Therapy. The Gerson Therapy is a daily routine consisting of 12-16 juices made fresh every hour. The diet becomes restricted. She could no longer have dairy, meat, alcohol, and had to keep herself out of contact with any chemicals including nail polish, hair dye, make-up, etc. She also started taking a mass amount of supplements to further detoxify and replenish her body with nutrients. With all of these immune boosters, it allows the body to first detoxify and replenish, then to be strong enough to help suppress the cancer.
Most doctors will recommend a “standard” treatment, usually chemotherapy or radiation. Chemotherapy is a poison injected to the body and destroys the immune system. So for someone with moderate to the late stages of cancer, you’re immune system is less likely to be able to handle chemotherapy. Conventional medicine focuses on the relief of symptoms and rarely places emphasis on prevention or the treatment of the cause of a disorder. All alternative systems, on the other hand, strive to find and treat the cause of a disorder and frown on covering up the symptoms. Alternative therapies are also much more focused on prevention.
I believe making a decision is based on beliefs and body type. There are plenty of people that come through cancer using modern medicine just fine, and then there is a good amount of people that don’t do so well because they may have a weak immune system and their body rejects the treatment. With alternative medicine, most are based on the diet, allow the body to fuel itself and replenish the body with nutrients that weren’t there before.
If I were given a dire prognosis the first thing I would do, just like Rhio did, would be to start researching as much as I can. I would read books by people who have experienced cancer already, such as O’Connor’s book himself, “They Said Months, I Chose Years: A Mesothelioma Survivor's Story." Reading books by people who have gone through a similar situation is extremely helpful, because instead of doing heavy extensive research into everything, learning what a person did and chose with a situation that is similar to yourself saves time. My family would also be a huge part in making a decision of which kind of treatment would be best for me. I would also go to as many clinicians, researchers, and other patients as I could.
Going back to my best friend who had cancer, it’s really hard choosing to go with any kind of alternative medicine. Most doctors will tell you that chemo, radiation, and surgery are the only ways to go and the best ways to go. Doctors in all fifty states are not allowed to give you any outside references, and it is actually against the law in all fifty states for doctors to suggest anything except chemotherapy, radiation or surgery for the treatment of any cancer. This is disturbing on many levels, as we are supposed to be enlightened in our society, but how can you be if there are restrictions on what skilled doctors can suggest to their patients? Most insurance policies do not cover any kind of natural treatment. With these kinds of road blocks, the popularity of alternative medicine is suppressed simply out of ignorance of the choices.
Because every situation, every person and every cancer is different, it’s possible that chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery could be beneficial but I wouldn’t let those be my only options if I was in that situation. And death, not an option either, as Rhio exemplified. Rhio is a great example to look up to if I ever got faced with this situation. He provided us with information that he has diligently gathered over many years in one book in order to help other patients like him faced with this dilemma in the future.

Hi

My husband is on cycle 7 out of 8 for Burkitt's lymphoma (same treatment as for ALL) meaning 2 more neutropenic periods. He had already gotten pneumonia and another unidentified infection. When we arrived to the hospital for this cycle we were notified that he has VRE. I would like to know if there are any natural ways to help him prevent infections during the neutropenic times.

Holiday feasting: beware the sugar and phytoestrogens!

About the article in this week's Cancer Compass newsletter: "Tips To
Fight Cancer With Your Fork This Holiday Season," I just want to offer a few warnings about sugar and phytoestrogens:
Carrots, sweet potatoes and apples are very
high in simple sugars that feed cancer, especially when prepared with
added sugar (glazed or made into pie.) While the carotenoids and proanthocyanins in them are indeed good cancer fighters, these foods
need to be eaten in great moderation by ANYONE fighting cancer, e.g. 1
small - medium carrot/day or one small helping plain baked sweet
potato/day, 1 apple/day (2 absolute max)So since it's a special occaison, if you want to have the baked/glazed yams or sweet potato pie, just take a very small helping, and savor every bite! Pomegranates and sweet potatoes (yams) contain very strong
phytoestrogens. As such, they are NOT good food choices for anyone
with ER/PR positive breast cancer, or other cancers that feed on estrogen. Foods with weak phytoestrogens are
ok, as they tend to act like the estrogen blockers or aromatase
inhibitors. Foods with strong phytoestrogens are NOT ok - they act
like hormone replacement therapy, and will actually FEED hormone
positive cancers. People with hormone positive cancers might want to do
a little web searching about other favorite foods likely to appear at
holiday feasts, to make sure they contain either no phytoestrogens, or
only weak phytoestrogens. (Cranberries ARE OK!)
About apples, I would add
one thing: it is important to eat the skin, but everything about an apple is digestible and full of
nutrients except the stem. Especially important to eat the seeds, as
they contain proanthocyanidins that get into cancer cells and kill
them. Yes, many of us have been taught not to eat the seeds because
"they are cyanide." Not strictly true: while they contain a cyanide
precursor - it can only be converted to cyanide by a certain enzyme
which is found abundantly in cancer cells, but only a few other cells
of the body. It's only when apple seeds are eaten to excess that they
present a danger of poisioning. A good rule of thumb: don't eat any
more seeds than you are eating units of that fruit/day. (If an apple
has 5 or 6 seeds, that's ok - still equals one unit of fruit.) Not likely that holiday apple dishes are cooked with the seeds, but for the other days of the year, yes, an apple a day IS a good thing - just make sure you eat both the skin and the seeds, cause that's where most of the cancer fighting nutrients are found!Happy holidays to all!Sincerely,Tre

natural whole foods supplement

While I am a firm advocate for the benefits of getting nutrition and cancer-fighting goodies as much as possible from diet rather than supplementation: natural whole foods, organic raw fruits and vegetables, etc, I know that sometimes it's really hard to do that. Fresh produce can be very expensive, and people, including myself, just don't always have the time or energy for all the preparatory work that goes into such a diet. For many juicing is a very healthy alternative, but again, a good juicer is expensive, and ya still have to buy the stuff that goes INTO the juicer, clean and prepare it, make the juice, and clean up after yourself. While researching information on another cancer-related topic, I came across a site for a product that really looks like a promising supplemental alternative for those times when it would be helpful to skip the buying/preparing process:https://www.juiceplus.com/nsa/pages/Home.soa?site=db76156 There's lots of valuable information on each of the tabs, including the ingredients of the supplement and why each is important. The order page offers a 4-month supply for less than $45, and that can be made in 4 monthly installments. Not TOO MANY companies willing to ship a large quantity of a consummable product and let there customers pay for it over time, so perhaps for some this product would be worth checking out. Please note that in addition to the 2 preparations shown on the home page, they also have a grape/berry product and one for children. Comments from anyone who tries, or has tried and/or uses this product would certainly be welcome, as I may someday want to try it myself. Sincerely,Tre

Need info on clinics

I am new to this site just today. My cousin, with whom I am as close as a sister, went through chemo & radiation last year for adenocarcinoma of the cervix. She thought she had beat it, then was told about 2 months ago that it has returned in her lungs. The CT scan showed 3 spots on one lung & 2 on the other & a lung biopsy confirmed. The doctors have told her that she has about a 20% chance that very agressive and intense chemo could slow the cancer down for a few months, but that is probably the best she can hope for with conventional medicine. She is exploring diet & nutrition therapy, and lives in Henderson, Tennessee. The closest cities to her are Memphis, Nashville, and Jackson, Tennesee. Has anyone had good experiences with alternative medicine clinic using nutrition therapies in these cities? I don't even know if it's okay to name the clinics. If not, feel free to email me if naming the clinic on a private email is allowed.

Selenium fights Cancer

Hi has any one had success with taking Selenium I was at the clinic when one of the prostrate cancer patient told me there free PSA is almost 0 and has been for over a year now. I thought this is strange You see when you have prostrate cancer you have two PSA test I got this from this web site to tell you more about it http://www.prostatehealth.org.au/v3/html/sheet_2.htm PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen is a protein which is secreted into ejaculate fluid by the healthy prostate. One of its functions is to aid sperm movement. Normally, only very low levels of the enzyme are able to enter the blood stream. However, because in cancer the normal structure of the tissue is disrupted, considerably more PSA is able to leak into the blood stream, and for this reason, a raised level of PSA in blood (or serum) can indicate the presence of prostate cancer. there are two tests ones the normal PSA the other is the free PSA the free PSA is the tumor marker ie the size of the prostrate tumor mines a free PSA of 8 my normil PSA last test was a PSA of 9.2 I was told by my doctor that ever year as my prostrate gets bigger my PSA will go up all Iv manage to do so far is to keep it from going up and maybe bring it down a little bit it was 9.8 now it 9.2 but to have it go down to 0 dream come true so I ask the usual question what were you doing to bring it down so low he said he’s been taking selenium I said come off it I take selenium to and it doesn’t have this effect on me he no you don’t under stand it the amount I take. now you got to under stand one selenium in large amounts is a poison he was taking 300mg a day I was taking only 25mg a day Iv now in crest it to 300mg a day Iv seen another two patients who have said there PSA is coming down I let you know how it go’s has any one else tried this please let me know I got the next bit from this website http://www.naturalnews.com/016446.html One of the most effective naturally occurring weapons against cancer is, like most healthy things, something many of us are not getting enough of. The mineral selenium has been shown in multiple studies to be an effective tool in warding off various types of cancer, including breast, esophageal, stomach, prostate, liver and bladder cancers. Not many people get the recommended dose of 200 micrograms a day. Most Americans only get between 60 and 100 micrograms of selenium daily from dietary sources, according to the Life Extension Foundation's Disease Prevention and Treatment. That means daily supplements might be worth considering. Selenium was first used in conventional medicine as a treatment for dandruff, but our understanding of the mineral has come a long way since then. Today, research shows selenium, especially when used in conjunction with vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene, works to block chemical reactions that create free radicals in the body (which can damage DNA and cause degenerative change in cells, leading to cancer). Selenium also helps stop damaged DNA molecules from reproducing. In other words, selenium acts to prevent tumors from developing. "It contributes towards the death of cancerous and pre-cancer cells. Their death appears to occur before they replicate, thus helping stop cancer before it gets started," says Dr. James Howenstine in A Physician's Guide to Natural Health Products That Work. will take care Ray

I have been reading a lot about super greens, but am not sure what product would be the best to buy and have gotten terribly confused. If there is anyone using them at this time and would like to comment it would be greatly appreciated. I did read great reviews about one of them BUT its something like $75 for a 14 day supply, which would be only one week if Jim and I both used it.Thanks,Esther

Glucose and insulin- Big negatives?

Cancer Compass (great resource) just had an article about the negative effects of excess glucose and insulin on getting a relapse of cancer polyps in the intestine. Excess of glucose and insulin ( as in prediabetes) had a significant increase in relapse of the polyps and caner. But what does this mean? Doe it mean I should eat less sugar? I had stage two rectal cancer and Im a year past chemo. I guess it means I should do a regimen of exercise to avoid diabetes - exercise, low carb diet. I will really miss my sweet foods even though I really don't eat much of it. Say it isn't so: I must give up chocolate. :)

Immunocal

Hello, I read that Immunocal http://www.immunolead.com/products/immunocal.html by increasing the level of glutathione in healthy cells and decreasing it in cancer cells helps fight the tumor. Beside the studies below:http://www.immunolead.com/clincalevidence/publishedstudies.h are there any other studies to support that? Is the following publication valid? Melnick, SJ, Rogers, P, Sacks, N, Kwyer, TA, Halton, J, Sandler, E, Escalon, E, Ladas, EJ. A Pilot Limited Institutional Study to Evaluate the Safety and Tolerability of Immunocal®, a Nutraceutical Cysteine Delivery Agent in the Management of Wasting in High-Risk Childhood Cancer Patients. Chicago Supportive Oncology Conference, August 2005. This pilot study, conducted through the Nutrition subcommittee of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), evaluated the safety and tolerability of Immunocal®, an undenatured whey-protein derivative which provides glutathione precursors. Depletion of reduced glutathione (GSH) in various organs including the immune system is a common finding in cachexia, reduced immune function, and poor wound healing, which are among the serious consequences cancer patients endure due to their disease and/or therapy. The study was a 90-day, two-dose evaluation of Immunocal® (0.5 g/kg/d vs. 1.0 g/kg/d) added to the standard institutional nutritional regimen. Twelve patients with high-risk tumors were enrolled from three institutions. Clinical and biochemical data were assessed at baseline and days 45 and 90. Immunocal® was successfully administered by one or more of three routes: oral, gastric tube, and nasogastric tube and was generally well tolerated. Compliance ranged from 50%-100% (7 patients with > 80%). All but 4 patients gained weight ranging from 7.1%-26.9% from the prestudy weight. Though not statistically significant, GSH levels were increased and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels decreased in all but 1 patient. Other observations include the amelioration of severe mucositis in 2 patients and abatement of nausea and vomiting in 2 patients. The findings indicate Immunocal® can be given safely and was well tolerated in the majority of pediatric cancer patients. The results are being used to establish end-points for a double-blind placebo controlled trial to be submitted to the COG scientific committee to evaluate of the efficacy of Immunocal® in high-risk cancer patients. Thank you very much

Reflux

I'm 5 weeks into an 8 week cisplatin/radiation program for squamacell in my neck, and just starting to use the PEG. I've tried everything to keep from getting reflux, which, when mixed with my SAE 140 weight siliva, just gags me. What's the trick to keeping this stuff in your stomach? I'm trying unflavored Jevity 1.5, and a pump, but I'm not sure it'll work any better than just doing it slow by hand. My stomach must be the size of a tea bag! Lately, I've been getting all my calories from beer, and I don't have any reflux from that. It's especially bad at night, it seems like I'm not digesting this stuff. Do I have to sleep setting up?

Flax Oil

I am new to the idea of flax oil and cottage cheest for the treatment of cancer. A few questions come to mind, though...According to Dr. Budwig, the diet must be followed with the flax oil / cottage cheese. Can the benefits be reaped by simply adding the flax / cheese to a normally good diet? Cliff Beckwith didn't give any indication of a dietary change in his testimonial. Can someone clear this up for me?
