I have read so many horror stories of people who gain alot of weight after a TT and they eat very little and exercise alot.  I am an athletice mother of 2 and am currently in good shape.  Please share your experiences and.or advice.

I didn't gain weight after TT.  My endo keeps me a little hyper for cancer control.  I'm trying to lose the last 10 lbs of my pre-pregnancy weight (had a baby after my TT), but it is only hard because I eat too much and don't exercise.  I wonder if some of the weight gain described comes from people who had a TT for graves disease, so are now no longer hyperthyroid?  Just curious.

Do you mind me asking a little more about your story?  How old you were when they found your cancer?  Did your biopsy come back definitive or highly suspicious?  DId you have to do RAI?  Do you feel more tired now or in any way different then before you had the TT?  What medication do you take now for thyroid replacement?  If I been being too nosey, please don't feel bad to tell me.  Thanks for your response! I am just scared of the unknown:(

I was 37.  I noticed lumps in my neck 4 months after my first son was born.  I was also feeling really tired but thought it was just because I had a colicky baby and wasn't getting much sleep.  Turned out I was also hypothryoid (Hashi's).  I went in for a CT and US with FNA of my thyroid and lymph nodes.  My lymph nodes were very large so it wasn't a question of whether I had cancer, but what kind.  My FNAs were definitive, papillary carcinoma in thyroid and LNs.  I had the diagnosis in the end of Feb of 05, waited until April 5th of 05 for my TT (needed the "good surgeon").  I had RAI in 8/05.  I was given permission to have another baby, and got pregnant on my first cycle and had another healthy boy in 8/06.  In 9/06 my neck US was normal, no evidence of cancer.  I have another follow-up visit with my endo next month.  I feel great.  I don't have any complaints about how I feel after my TT and RAI.  I just don't want it to come back.  You'll find some descriptions of people's experience with TT amongst the threads here.  There are also many women discussing thyroid issues on the BabyCenter website under trying to conceive with thyroid issues.

Forgot the medication question.  Before my surgery I was profoundly hypothyroid with a TSH of 99.  I was put on 100mcg of Levoxyl.  After surgery my endo put me on 150 mcg of Levoxyl.  Now my TSH sits around .06.  I got pregnant with a TSH of .036 and maintained my pregnancy on the same dose (my TSH got up to 1.26 during pregnancy but I didn't need a dose change).  Like many endos do, I'm kept hyper to suppress TSH so there isn't a "drive" to make thyroid tissue active, i.e. so that thyroid tissue (cancerous) won't grow well.  That's the idea.

Thanks for all of the info.  I checked out the other board and it really helped.  I guess only time will tell for me.  I have a 1 and a 3 year old so I want to take care of the cancer to be around to see them grow.   I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again!
