My husband has small cell recurrent lung cancer.  He is now on his second chemo mix for his cancer which is carboplatin and camptosar.  They switch his white cell injections to neupogen from neulasta.  His white blood count does not seem anywhere near what it was with neulasta.  Does anyone know the differences in these two medications?  Is neupogen a generic?  Thanks for your help.

Hi, from what I understand Neulasta is the "child" of Neupogen. They are of the same family that is...but Neulasta is the newest one time shot and Neupogen requires more than one. Our docs use 4 or 5.

Neulasta is a long-acting Neupogen.  They are the same drug.  Neupogen would be given daily and Neulasta can be given every chemo cycle.

My mom starts chemo soon. We were told that with neupogen she would have to come in  for 5 consecutive days after chemo to get this shot. I asked about neulasta and the doc said that the advantage to neulasta is you come in once, 24 hours after last chemo and get the shot once. He did say that Neulasta is much more expensive and many insurance companies don't cover it. So her life isn't consumed by going back and forth to the hospital just for the shot, we checked and luckily her insurance does.

If your insurance covers either drug then try the Neulasta first, since it's only 1 shot and visit.  I had Neulasta at first during my chemo for BC and I reacted quite strongly---terrible all-over body aches, so much so that it hurt to be touched.  Finally I asked if there was anything else to take and was told about Neupogen but I'd have to go in for 7 shots.  It was worth the trips for me.  I still had some bone aches but not as bad as with the Neulasta.  Also during the last series of shots, I finally mentioned the pain to my acupuncturist and he was able to relieve the aches with one session!  Wish I'd mentioned it much sooner.

Best to you in this journey.
