My dad has now lost over 100 pounds and it's not stopping.  He can't keep any food down...nothing sounds good to him.  On a good day my mom and I can get him to keep 3 ensures down and maybe some fruit.  It is soooo painful for him when he throws up.  He is on some really heavy chemo right now which is the cause of this.  He's thinking of trying something new because all he does all day is sleep and throw up.  That's definitely not living.  Anyone going through this same trouble right now??

My husband refused to eat and was nauseaus all the time.  The nurse told hime to take 1 compazine 3 times a day approximately 20 minutes before he would eat and within a week the nausea subsided, His appetite started to come back and he was able to take a little food.  He stayed on the compazine through the chemo and radiation and started to stop taking it approximately 2 weeks after the radiation ended.  He drank Butter Pecan Ensure Plus and at times added a little chocolate syrup to it.  Hopethis is of some help.

Does your Dad have a feeding tube? My mom is going through treatments now and has not been able to eat for a week. The radiation doctor said she needed 6 drinks a day if that was all she was doing. We buy Walmarts Equate because it has 350 calories. More than Ensure. My Mama only weighed 108 when we started . She has lost about 6 lbs. Keep after the doctors til you get something that can help the nausea. The feeding tube has been a life saver for her. I hope things get better real soon for your Dad. Let us know. Pat

Keeping him on antiemetics around the clock may help rather than waiting until he needs it.  A feeding tube in this case is "critical" in my opinion.  My patients do much better with the feeding tube.  They can still eat but the tube keeps their strength up and keeps them out of the hospital usually.

Hi - Try scandishakes.  They are used for patients with Cystic Fibrosis.  They are high calorie shakes that you can make with milk.  I have some for my mom and she says that they are actually pretty good.  I know you can get them on line, but also have heard that they are sold at Giant Foods (like Safeway or Publix) in the Northeast.  If you can get them there, they may be available in other chain grocery stores.

They work for my mom because she does not feel like eating much but now at least she is getting more calories in one shot.

 Good luck.
