Subject: TCC?
Date: 03/20/2007
My 3 yr.old female Brussels Griffon named Sprout ended up with a urinary blockage three weeks ago. A First. To make a long story short, she had bladder surgery to get a catheter through her from the inside, which was still difficult because it was like she was swollen closed. The vet found struvite stones, but felt this was incidental. Her bladder was very inflamed and the culture proved a staph infection. I brought her to a specialist per my vets suggestion because he was puzzled with how difficult it was to get a catheter through the urethra and thought growth/TCC. A preliminary ultra sound by the referral vet showed a thickened bladder wall. They felt the infection was so bad it closed her up. They never biopsyed and felt she didn't fit the criteria for TCC. She came home without catheter and is peeing. She has been treated with Clavamox for 3 weeks. This weeks urine culture is negative. Problem is, now small clots are coming out after every urination and she squats for a very long time. She's eating and playing and happy, but the bloody clots have me concerned. I am awaiting my vets call after he confers with the Vet Referral. Any Suggestions??

My cocker spaniel Betty - 4 1/2 yrs old has been going through exactly the same thing.. its been ongoing now for about 9 months our vet was also unable to cathatise. After yet another urine test was taken, it has now confirmed Bladder Cancer. and Betty is in for surgery in the morning.  Our world is falling apart.  I hope your baby gets well.

I am so sorry about your Betty. And I understand what you must be going through. What surgery was done and did things go well?

We finally saw the Vet Specialist and had a biopsy done on our Brussels, Sprout. It came back positive for cancer, but the Vet doesn't believe the result. Two ultrasounds of the bladder, a week apart, showed improvement to the bladder wall. The doctor said that cancer just doesn't do that. He knows the patholigist and thinks he based his findings on the dog's history. Plus, there isn't anymore blood in the urine. But she does still seem to linger in a squat when peeing. We are in a holding pattern while the Vet is away. We are continuing antibiotic until he comes back the end of this month. We will do another biopsy with another pathologist and hope the vets 'gut feeling' is right.

In the meantime, I have started giving her Graviola. 10 drops a day. I just don't want to let so much time go by without doing something. We love this dog SO MUCH.
