Yes, you are doing the right thing by seeing a hematologist. I have read small percentage (1% +/-) of those with an MGUS progress to multiple myeloma every year, and a percentage never progress. I would get a relationship going with a hematologist that wants to check you regularly (every 3-6 months?). If the MGUS increases too much, I imagine your hematologist will want to eventually x-ray your bones to look for tumors, and do a hip marrow biopsy to see if anything is there also.
I am 36 and have an "m-spike". My situation is a little different in that I have had a tumor (plasmacytoma) and have had it treated successfully. My m-spike is back (after 3 years), so my hematologist/oncologist, has moved me up from blood checks every 6 months to every 3 months.
You could very well have an MGUS the rest of your life and it turn out to be nothing, but better safe than sorry.
I am curious, in what part of the country do you live. In the city? In the country?
Hope that helps...?
