Has anyone been on Nexavar? It is proven in Kidney and Renal Cancers. Has shown good results in Liver, so this is a new drug for Liver Cancer. This has many side effects as alot of cancer drugs. Was wondering if any one has been on this?

Dear Deets:  My father started Nexavar in early December of 2006.  At that time he was given just a few weeks to live.  He passed away in Feb 2007. At that time I wasn't sure if it was the cancer or the side effects. Looking back now I do believe that Nexavar prolong his life with minimum side effects  and he was able to be treated in the comfort of his home. Thus, giving him quality of life. As for the meds and side effects, one of the most important things we learned quickly was timing of Nexavar- one hour before eating or three hours after. At first we would work his eating around the meds and quickly learned to work the meds around his eating - even if that would mean a dosage at 3:00 a.m.! It sounds simply, but I wish someone had given us that advice earlier.

Once last note, Nexavar is extremely expensive ($2,000 a month and insurance does not cover it) However, there are programs to receive it for free.

I hope this helps

Deets: Your side effects sound very uncomfortable and I hope you find some relief.  I also hope more people will post with their experience with Nexavar that might help others with side effects and other possible complications.   I believe this med will be all over the board soon with positive results.  Take Care!

hi there!

My father was taking nexavar for 16 days and it did not help him.He past away 3 days after stopping the treatment. I dont know whether the nexavar sped the growth of the tumor but i can tell you that from the day he started he went downhill really quickly. My father had two tumors on his liver one was 10.cm and the other 3.5cm he also had cirrossis which didnt help the situation.

Lots of side effects and his tumor grew.

Deets, my friend started Nexavar on 3/28/2007.  Weekly she had 6 liters of fluid drained.  At 4 weeks 4/25/2007 only 3 1/2 liters was drained.  Her cancer is the cause of the fluid.  At least in the short term it appears to be working.  She was told, if cancer scrinkage did occur the amount of fluid build up would decrease, and even disappear.  Read about the phase III trails of Nexavar.  It appears to work at least in the short term.  In June there is going to be an update on the research.  If the cancer is HCC this is really your only hope to at least extend life.  It may not be a cure, but with life there is hope.  Yes, there are side effects and some people do better then others.  It is on fast trace of FDA approval for fighting HCC.  It is already approved for some forms of Kidney cancer and I believe it has been known to killed that kind of cancer, or make it so small it's not detected.

dear deets,

My husband has advanced HCC, his oncologist suggeted sorafenib one month ago, but asked him to wait without any treatment for some'data release' on this medicine, and yesterday when we went to see the doc, he told us to wait for another 2 to 3 weeks, my god!! imagine how fustrating it is for us. can you tell me where are you seeing  your doctor, or where can we get a doctor who would prescribe this medicine? thanks

I also saw some clinical trial testing sorafenib combined with doxorubicin, are you on single medicine?

Hi Laven

So sorry if did not answer earlier. I am on just Nexavar. As I have mentioned elsewhere on here all is going well. Just the hand and feet issues.

I am in southeast Wisconsin. I am not sure what doctors are up on this, but i beleive the big convention is this weekend, with the results of nexavar going to be talked about. Maybe try a larger hospital or a teaching hospital. Where are you near, a larger city?

Take care

In April 2005 my best friend was found to have Kidney cancer when his hip broke from the cancer that had went to his hip. They told him at that time he had 3 to 6 months.

--- After replacing his hip and removing his kidney he was starting to have pain in his other hip and leg. They then found a large tumor around his spine starting to squeeze the nerve. They also found a small tumor on his other kidney and other hip, 5 sites for sure. The spine tumor was radiated over a 2 or three week period and shrank some, his doctor got him in to the phase III trial for Nexavar and today he is almost as good as he was before his hip broke.

----There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he would not be here with out the Nexavar

( 2and ½ years later)

--- From what I am reading on other cancer boards other patients are having similar results from Nexavar and Sutent, for Kidney and Liver.

Also most side effects went away after a month or two.

I wish all of you good luck.
