I was told that I had a very small mass that would allow me to have the spinster sparing surgery.  The cancer was actually stage 3 and in order to get clear cells they had to go all the way to the vaginal wall.  This surgery was 2/7/07.  The vaginal wall did not hold up and on 2/27 I had to have it patched on both sides.  I went back to Dr. 2 weeks ago for a recheck and there is a possibility that I may have to have the surgery to remove the rectum and would have to have a colostomy.  I just want to know if this is common for other women and how have they done.

Hi, Family of Five

Just want to clarify...They were trying to get clear margins? I had Rectal Melanoma, I had Tomotherapy, targeted Radiation At Cancer treatment center in Philly Pa, it included my pelvis and Vaginal wall....Being 57 yrs old I was appalled by a Colostomy...I chose Radiation and Chemo using

Temador and Thallidamide, I am now Cancer free for 1 year so far, and my rectum and the rest of me is intact...Every one has to make their own decisions, I hope this helps,,,Jeannechat

Sorry so long in responding.  It should have read to get clear margins. I will be having 6 months of treatments.  I started Chemo 2 weeks ago and rad. this week.  I will have 28 days of rad. and will have another 4 day round of chemo in 2 weeks.  After the rad i will have chemo for the rest of the time.  I am hoping to be able to take a pill form of the chemo after the rad treatments.  I am doing really good right now.  Everything seems to be healing fine.

Hi Family of five

Jeanne here, Great to hear your feeling fine, just a caution, I felt pain and burning after ending radiation, but thankfully it was short lived......

I need to go back to my surgeon in July for followup Colonoscopy...

I hate the Prep.... Again keep the faith .....jeanne

Hi Jeanne, I am glad to hear that it has been one year.  I want to know how it goes in July.  I will be praying for you!  I hate the prep for the Colonoscopy.

Last week was tough on Tuesday I had rad. and had stomach cramps so bad with bad diarrea.  My Dr. took me off rad for 2 days and gave me pain meds for the diarrea and the pain.  It worked well.  He did tell me that the next week and a half would be tough.  I keep reminding myself that this is only a short speck of time and this will be over soon.

 Keeping the faith,Stacy
