A Quick Deterioration

My mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of Feb 2007, she has since had an operation to unblock her bile duct. At that stage the cancer had also spread to her lungs. I have just been advised that the doctors have also discovered the cancer has spread to her liver, in the space of just over a month. Has anyone else been in this situation?? Why is the cancer spreading so quickly? We have passed the point of dicussing chemo options and have gone into the making her comfortable option. This has all happened with no prior warning.

Hi there, so sorry to hear about your mother. My father was diagnosed 6 weeks ago, with met. to Liver as well, he is undergoing Gemzar/Tarceva coctail. Had a bad reaction and has to hold tretment for a while. Starts again in 10 days. Now regarding your mother, my Dad's oncologist said there was not point in knowing if his cancer was other places than Pan/Liver, because they were treating him as aggresively as possible. I am assuming your dear mother is having symptoms that indiicated lung. met? I don't know what your religious beliefs are, but we are Christians, and are praying for a healing, I pray the same for your mom. Is she too weak to undergo any more chemo?

God Belss you in yoru fight,

PC is agressive, resistant to most chemo and usually metastatic at diagnosis.  She should be eligeable for Gemzar.  Has she recieved any treatment?

Wat is Gemzar?  My friend had 3 chemo treatments after being diagnoised with metastatic pc and the tumor grew 25% in size and her doctor stopped all treatment and said all he could do was give her pain mgmt with some kind of quality of life.  She has given up but we are hoping for miracles.  Do you think the Gemzar will here her?

Thank you and God bless you all.

I am so sorry to hear about your mother, but unfortunately I have been in the same situation. My father was diagnosed in May 2006 with Stage 4 Pancreatic cancer with met to the liver and lungs as well. I know how you are feeling and the news is so devastating you feel like the world is closing in on you. When we received the news, we were told my dad had 3-6 months to live. The doctor began to treat him with Gemzar but we decided to go for a second opinion. This doctor stated she would treat my father's cancer aggressively with GTX ( a combination of Gemzar, Taxatere, and Xeloda). My father had a strong will and decided to start treatments immediately. Other than some mild side effects, my father responded well. He fought very strong and continued to stay positive. My mom, my sisters,my brother, and myself also stayed positive throughout the treatments and prayed every day. My dad fought very hard but ,sadly lost his battle this past March. I know this might not sound encouraging and believe me I cry every day and wished I had many more years with my dad, but if we listened to the first doctor, my dad might not have had the time we were given. It is a personal choice and one that the person needs to make for themselves and there are stories I have read about where people like my dad survived for years. It is very hard to understand this situation, and having gone through it ,I still can 't make any sense of it and probably never will. All I could tell you is explore all the options and find another doctor if you are not comfortable with the prognosis. I know the statistics are grim, but try to have faith and believe that your mom can fight this, and I hope she will. My prayers are with you, your mom, and your family and I wish you the best.
