Hi folks,
About a year or a year and a half ago, I experienced a red rash in my eyebrows that slowly spread down the sides of my nostrils. Perhaps coincidentally, I began to experience a swelling beneath my right eye at the same time. The rash went away after some treatment, but the swelling remained and grew slowly. I was diagnosed (and treated for) everything from dental infection to rosacia, but to no effect. Over time, the swelling slowly hardened / firmed up, and grew to obstruct my vision rather badly. However, it was not painful, and could be rubbed vigorously without discomfort.
I was examined (along with other difficult cases) in a hospital 'Grand Rounds' by some of the leading medical professionals in the SW Ohio, Northern Kentucky and SE Indiana area. (I'm located in Cincinnati, OH.)I was told that when my case was reviewed, the request for opinions, suggestions and comments was met with dead silence.
I underwent several biopsies, including one that left me in intensive care overnight from the extent of the surgery, and from which I'm still recovering. A substantial quantity of tissue was removed, though the swelling (slowly subsiding) was considerably worse from the surgical trauma. Local laboratories were unable to make any diagnosis from the samples except that 1) it was definitely NOT a bacterial infection, and 2) was 'almost certanly' non-cancerous. A portion of the tissue sample was sent to the AFIP (Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) in Washington for further diagnostic consideration. (I'm told that the AFIP is one of, if not the best medical research facilities in the country, if not in the entire world.)
I was just informed that the considered opinion from the AFIP is that it could be 'a reaction product' (as a former research chemist, I can tell you that the term describes virtually every physical material on the face of the planet, and is thus absolutely worthless as an informative diagnosis!) or it is (more likely) a 'small b-cell non-Hogdon's lymphoma'.
My physician is unavailable to see me for further discussion and consideration of options for two weeks. I'm hoping someone here can shed a little more light on my situation, or at least explain exactly what a 'small b-cell non-Hogdon's lymphoma' is, so that I can find more data on it myself, so that I can be in a better position to discuss the situation with my doctor.
Thank you for any help or comments you may be able to offer.
God Bless
