Subject: How to Pay After Insurance is Gone??
Date: 06/22/2004
I have been diagnosed with recurrence breast cancer in the bone. I am on treatment of Aredia and Faslodex once a month. As you know there is no cure at this time. I have one big worry that I can't seem to find an answer too. The only insurance I have is through my job. Can any one tell me what to do after I can't work any more? I won't be able to get disability for a long time after I am out of work so what do I do to continue to pay for my treatments until I can get disability? I am scared about my future as it is but if I can't pay for treatment that future is even bleaker. Please give me your ideas and experiences on this matter so I can have a little peace of mind. Thanks, Susie

Hi Robert,
Since I put that message out on the board so many months ago, my family and I have done some checking. The American Cancer Society had some good ideas. I don't know how old your Father is but he should be able to get on either Medicare if he is 65 or over or Medicaid if not. As long as his income is very low. There is also some other state funded programs that may help like the Hill-Burton Program. I also found out from my nurse at the clinic that if you talk to the insurance people at the doctor's office or clinic that some time the pharmaceutical company will give treatment for a time at no cost or some times very little cost to the patient. Hang in there Robert. Tell your Father I am praying for him.

Susie,

I am not 100% sure about this suggestion, because different states have different laws on what insurance companies can and cannot exclude, as well as on pre-existing conditions. I am in Michigan, and I know that BlueCross/BlueShield do extend coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. It might be worth your while checking with them.

I know a friend who is licensed with BC/BS, I can ask him for you to see if it might be something you can fall back on. Again, I am not totally sure, but I have good feelings that it might be a solution for your concern.
