Hi all -

My dad has early stage II MM.  He was just diagnosed a couple of months ago.  He has had two transfusions, biophosphonate IV and did two weeks of radiation.   He has two lesions on his spine and has been constantly in bad pain or zonked out from pain meds.  His appetite is pretty much non existent and he is bed ridden about 22 hours a day.  He is starting to give up. He started Revlimid today and started the dex a couple of weeks ago.

Now for the question.  I am hoping that if we can get the back pain under control he will have the strength to fight this.  Does anyone here have experience with Kyphoplasty for compression fractures?  I know of it being done to three (non -MM) people and twice the results were not good.

Thanks so much!

Mergie - My Mom (73) has stage 3 MM that was just diagnosed in Jan. 07 - during the second CT that discovered additional spinal compression fractures.  (Earlier they told her she had ostioporosis when the first set of compression fractures emerged.)  The pain is very memorable for us all.  The Kyphoplasty was the miracle for her (she has had it done twice) - as were the increases made to her Fentenyl (sp?) patches.  Her pain is under control finally (225mg worth of patches!) - yet her cancer is really not. Her complete cancer experience has been brief - yet extensive.  We have had 45 hospital days so far this year.  The reactions to her chemo put us there - but her pain is still under control - praise God!  Hopefully this helps some - I just found this site and responded right away!

Hi - I thank you for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately my father passed away less than 2 months after being diagnosed. I truly believe the pain in his back is what pushed him to give up. I wish your mom and your family the best. I am still trying to digest what happened..... -mergie
