Diarrhea from Gemzar

Has anyone experienced chronic diarrhea from the chemotherapy agent Gemzar?  My husband began receiving chemo in August of 2006. He husband has gone to the gastroentrologist 3 times in the past 2 months and each time all the stool tests have come back negative.  The doctor now wants to do a colonoscopy to see if the lining in his colon is inflamed.  The problem is that my husband has lost 20 lbs due to this diarrhea so I am hesitant for him to have that procedure.  He is taking Lomotil whenever he has diarrhea and it had reduced his bouts of diarrhea.  It is so frustrating when doctors cannot tell you what is causing the problem and they can only give you medications that deal with the symptoms.

i have sent you a private reply that i hope has helped you somewhat. dealing with a serious illness, whether it is you or someone you love, is always difficult. even with my experience in the nursing field, it has sometimes been frustrating and difficult for me and my husband to navigate our way around the healthcare system. the important thing is to ask questions (write them down..believe me, you will forget!) and get clear answers. but remember, doctors are human. alot of what they do to get answers involves alot of trial and error to rule out "what it isn't"  to find out "what it is". jimandkathy
