Subject: Sister has Multiple Myeloma having First Stem Cell Transplant
Date: 05/26/2007

My sister is going to have her Stem Cell Transplant .  I am one of her caregivers.  I will be staying with her in Little Rock , Arkansas .  She has been getting all her treatments from the University Hospital of Arkansas.

My sister normally resides in Tampa, Florida.  I am from Long Island, New York.

I am getting nervous this is her only chance at survival.  Does anyone have any experience with this type of Cancer as a caregiver after a Stem Cell Transplant?

Thanks, Susan

Hi Susan,

I haven't got a lot of information as my mum tries not to let me in on too much.  My mum was diagnosed 7 years ago with Multiple Myeloma.  Within the first 12 months she had a transplant using her own stem cells.  Although this was a difficult time for her, it was worth it, she got about 3 years remission which was great.  She was then on thalidimine treatment for a couple years until her the protein level steadily increase.  She is now at day number 3 since she received a stem cell transplant from her brother.  I now know how difficult this journey is going to be compared to her first transplant - or maybe I'm just more involved now - I was only 17 years old when she had her first one.  I know this is going to be hard on my mum and everyone in our family.  I felt so anxious leading up to the transplant, but now that we're finally here and the fight can start I'm feeling much more at ease.  I know that this is my mum's only hope of remission unless they can come up with yet another treatment.  But we're positive, we know it's going to be tough...but I'm holding on with everything I've got to be strong for her, because I know she's way too strong to be beaten.

 Good luck with your sister....

 Regards

Rebecca
