Subject: I need ideas for easier feeding

My husband who is 79 yrs old has been diagnosed with throat cancer in January. The hospitals here in Montreal and St Jerome have both refused to give him any treatment. They say it would be inhumane for him to go through all of the radiation treatments, suffer the side effects, etc., just to have the same results. They say because of his age the cancer will be very slow growing. He is using a couple of codeine and triatec pills a day also the magic mouth. Naturally he is sleeping a lot. He has lost 30 lbs in the last 4 months, this is I think, because he has stopped drinking beer (is losing his beer belly) and has certainly cut down on his food intake.

I desperately need food recipe ideas to help make it easier for him to swallow his food and still get all of the vitamins that he needs.

Question please:  Because he is not taking the treatments, does this mean he wont lose his tastebuds and have the other symtoms mentioned by others? Beside the sore mouth what else can we expect him to have?

I purchased a high protein, high calorie drink mix for my husband from a nutrition store.  Myoplex makes one, but I think this one was called "Gainer" or weight gainer.  If you have a GNC nearby, they may be able to help you.  We got ours from a small store that specialized in supplements for people weight training (body builders).  GNC does have a website as well.  The drinks have 600 calories per serving, very high in protein, but low in sugar (a good thing!!).  they also provided 100% nutrition as well.  My husband found this recipe recently for a high calorie 'quiche':

Blend the following by and or electric mixer: 6 eggs, 1 oz tub of soft cream cheese.  Add one pint of heavy whipping cream, 2 "soup spoons" or bisquick and blend again.  Add about 1 cup of shredded cheese (your choice).  Bake in a pan at 350 for 45 minutes - let it cool for 20 minutes and enjoy!

It is high calories, but chock full of protein!!  I hope this helps!

ensure "plus" or boost "plus" or any of the Plus products are nutritionally complete. Depending on his size 6 to 10 cans per day. Those on peg tubes eat only this and they can live without any other food. And, what about a peg tube......are your Drs. willing to give him a peg tube in his stomach, if it is too painful to eat orally......this is a simple and common procedure. I would ask, this would give him options to eat orally or by stomach tube
