Subject: Minimal reaction to Carac

I have been on Carac for 22 days with minimal effect despite my numerous visible kerotosis. I have been told to stop the Carac and was given Efudex to apply 2x per day. I had the choice presented to me to continue with the old treatment for another month or two or to try the stronger drug. I'll let you all know what I find to be the difference between the two if any.

If you are reading these posts Before starting your treatment (and getting yourself worked up with fear), then take note. Everyone reacts differently to these drugs. I put off my own treatment for 6 months and worried myself silly, and so far all for nothing. Wasted energy and time. Better to get it over with . The precancerous places only get worse with time if not treated, not better.

Hello,

This is my promised follow up on my treatment with Carac and Efudex. I completed 32 days total. 22 days of once a day Carac and 10 days 2x per day Efudex. I have been told to stop treatment for now. The Efudex did not seem to have a more harsh effect on MY skin. The doctor said in perhaps 5 percent of the cases he has treated it is more potent. I returned for my follow up and because no new spots had surfaced and the old place were simply scaly, I was told to see the doctor again in Sept. He does not know at present whether my mild response was able to eradicate any of the kerotoses or not. I will wait to see when the red dots fade as to what is underneath.. All in all, unless I have trouble resuming normal coloring, I would definitely give Carac a go again if needed. I much prefered the one a day option so that I could wash my face in the am upon awkening. Efudex was greasier and even more expensive.

I also treated a part of my chest and got very different results there. Turns out I was more sensitive on my chest and my precancerous places got really red, sore and desirably yucky.

Take note that I am a very fair skinned, blue eyed blond who could not even tolerate Retin A because of irritation. I also have to use hypo allegenic products. But Carac and Efudex felt very mild to me. Not nearly as irritating as the Retin A.   Go figure.
