Subject: Information about treatment
Date: 05/30/2007

Hi, my name is Laura and my mother was diagnosed last year with multiple myeloma.  She is 55 years old.  At the first visit, to the cancer doctor, the doctor told my mother that right now she does not need treatment but if her number, i'm not sure what this number is, got to 1800, then they'd discuss what her treatment options are.  She went to see the doctor 6 months ago and her number had gone up to 1530, so he said come back in 6 months, so today she returned (6months later) and her number again increased to 1750 and now he's saying they don't do any treatments until they reach 3000.  This is my first time on this site and  it seems that people are getting some sort of treatment as soon as they are diagnosed with MM.  Could someone please help me figure out what the number 1750 means and if she is being cared for appropriately?  Thank you so much.

Laura,

Change Doctors immediately, that # is the IGG she should also be having her M Spike checked.

Is this Doc. an Oncologist/Hematologist, you need to find some one who specializes in MM.

I do not know where you live but there are cancer centers all over the US and sources that you can use to find them.

Check with this site and with a site called IMF, International Myeloma foundation.

I researched all this when I found out I had MM and it has been an ongoing source of info.

Anyway, all the best. Tell your Mom to keep her spirits there is help out there.

Patricia,

Thank you for responding. I contacted my father and he was wondering what IGG and M spike meant.  The doctor she is seeing is a cancer doctor and her family doctor is on leave until the middle of July.

Thanks Again,

Laura
