Subject: My dad has liver cancer
Date: 05/30/2007

Hello everyone. My dad got diagnosed with liver cancer in December of 2006. The doctors don't think he will live too long. I am only 13 years old and my dad is my best friend and i don't know what i would do without him. Is there anyone out there that is in this situation or just has some advise for me ? I just hate feeling sorry for myself because I have a friend whos dad died of cancer and i know that i can talk to her about it and i do , but i would also like to hear from everyone that is reading this . Please Please Please respond to this letter and i am sure your letter will make a difference on me. And i heard that liver cancerdoesn't respond good to chemo? Is that true???

Thanks,

Kalli

Hi Kalli:

Sorry to hear about your dad. The type of treatment depends on the stage of the cancer. There are numerous options available, which I am sure the doctors must have discussed with your father or other family members. Dont loose hope, if he survived 6 months, it tells me that it may not be too bad. What is your dads condition? Be strong and try to spend most of your time with your dad..

hi there,

my dad was diagnosed too with liver cancer last october 2006. but i lost him last april 25. He was my eveything, he was my best friend, my dad, my buddy and all.. its been a month now and i still miss him.

My dad was treated with chemo embolization and since his tumor was too big, as big as a cup, the chemo could not kill it, so he had complication too because of it. he also was on this drug called nexavar.

Hang in there and be strong, im sure all the doctors are doing the best they can to prolong his life and make it better. my advice is enjoy your dad each day that you can, thats what i did, so in the end i had no regrets till he passed on. i am 28 and when your losing a dad age does not matter. be strong and pray.

Hi Kalli

My lovely Dad had liver cancer, he became very tired and ill about a year ago, but wasn't diagnosed until February this year.  I finally lost him on 1st June, almost a month ago now.  What i would say to you is that by the time my dad's cancer was found it was too late to operate or offer alternative treatments, however there are a huge range of available treatments so there may well be options for your Dad.  Do not give up hope. Be as strong and positive as you can.  I surfed the net endlessly on this illness and there are people who survive this and carry on.

My Dad's consultant did recommend milk thistle and Dad took it daily, this is an alternative therapy but highly regarded by conventional medics - its function is to support the liver and Dad's doctor had patients who had very good effects with this.

My thoughts are with you.  I miss my Dad every moment and I cannot believe he is gone, but I have the comfort of knowing that I spent lots of time with him and said everything to him that I needed to.  Stay positive. xxx

Hi Kalli,

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. My name is Sadie and I'm 13 years old too. In 2003, I lost my dad to liver cancer. I was 6, not long after Christmas when he was first diagnosed and he died 4 days before his birthday, when I was almost nine. I still cry lots and I miss him so much. I'm glad to know there's someone else out there that I can talk to from around my age. I'm glad for you that you have a friend who you can confide to when you have questions or when your just upset. Just remember, see your dad as much as possible because he will be going through alot of pain and needs his family. I hope your dads illness will get better and I hope for the best. I would love a reply from you sometime and hope your ok

From Sadie

Kalli:

I had liver cancer that was diagnosed in February 2007. In my case, I went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and they surgically removed the tumor in my liver. They found no other sign of it elsewhere, so I did not have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation. In your Dad's case, I think it will depend on what type of liver cancer he has, primary or secondary, and if it is a tumor, how big it is. Please make sure your Dad is going to a facility that specializes in liver cancer. Local hospitals and doctors really don't have a clue about how to treat it, and they certainly don't know all of the new drugs that are available, and there are some that may help immensely. I don't know where you live, Kalli, but there are hospitals across the country that specialize in LC, such as Mayo in Rochester, MN, Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland,OH, Sloan-Kettering in NY, USC Med center in California. Don't wait, try to get him to go to one of these right away. I will pray for you and your Dad.
