Hi Lynda,
Yes, it is true people usually go into remission after a BMT, and sometimes without needing one. Not everyone needs a BMT. It depends on several things. Does he need one? If he does, and he is not his own donor, but has a donor, just pray that his body accepts the donor's marrow and that everything goes well. I am a Leukemia(AML-Acute Myelogenous Leukemia) survivor. I was treated with 3 rounds of high-dose Chemo intravenously, and Chemo in pill form and also a Chemo-related drug in pill form over a period of two years. In Chronic Leukemia, early on, the abnormal blood cells can still carry out their functions, and sometimes people have no symptoms. It worsens slowly, and symptoms occur as the Leukemia cells in the blood rise. In Acute Leukemia, the blood cells are very abnormal and cannot carryout their normal functions. The abnormal cells increase rapidly, and Acute Leukemia worsens quickly. The sooner a person is diagnosed and treated, the better the chance is for survival. I was treated JUST IN TIME, Thank God. I think your God-Brother will be okay, try to encourage him, and help him stay strong. If you click on Cancer Information at the top of the Cancer Compass page, you'll see a list of different types of cancers. Click on Leukemia, and it will bring up Leukemia Information and it will tell you all about Leukemia (types, treatments, etc.) I hope and pray everything goes well for your God-Brother and that you get the information you need to ease your mind and to support him. God bless you both. Take care.
