LEEP procedure side effects? No menstration.

Hi everyone. I was just wondering about something regarding the LEEP procedure. I had it done about 21/2 years ago and am still continuing to show low grade cells. The thing I'm wondering about the most is has anyone's period stopped completely or become infrequent. That is what is happening with me. My doctor thought I might be going into early menopause but after finally doing the tests to check out my hormones and whatnot everything came back normal. I am also HIV+ so now he thinks it has something to do with that. Anyways after having the LEEP procedure this is when my period stopped. I only get spotting and even that's very rare nowadays. I also get hotflashes, mood swings, depession, tired all the time. My thyroid was also checked so it's not from that. I'm am currently seeing 3 different doctors, all from the same hospital and when I brought the subject up that my period might have stopped because of the LEEP procedure they were all quick to say, no no, it's not from that. I'm so tired of feeling like this. Has anyone else experienced this?

Were you hospitalized for your leep procedure? Im not one to always trust a doctors word, id get another opinion to make sure. If three doctors are saying it cant be the leep it probably isnt. If they hospitalized you for it, and you were put to sleep and they had to take a large section of the cervix out you may want to get examined to make sure everything healed normally. What you were explaining are all symptoms of menopause though, so you may very well have been going through that. And because your HIV+ im sure that can affect periods. Have you researched the affect of HIV on menstruation? See another doctor, dont give them anyone else's opinions right away, just tell them what you know with your health. I recommend another exam to make sure youve healed correctly also!

Hi - I had leep procedure in june, and i have the same symptoms you have described earlier (lack of period, hotflashes, and lethargy).  I've seeing several doctors w/o success.  Has your condition improved? How did you treat it?

 Thanks for reading this message.

I had the LEEP procedure over 2 years ago and have not been menstrating since.  When I told my gyno he said "Good for you!".  He denied that it could be a result of the LEEP. He said it was probably from taking the pill for so many years (since 18yrs and I'm 39), but prior to the LEEP I had very regular (thanks to the pill) periods that were always 6 days long. After the LEEP- gone.

Another doc said the stress of the surgery could cause this problem, but that was 2 years ago, so it seems like physical stress would not still be a factor. I didn't find the surgery to be all that stressful emotionally or physically after the fact.

I worry that the uterine lining would build up and decay inside of me without being shed and asked about this. The doctor said this can happen but that I'd be having pain if that were the case. No pain but I feel my abdomen is very enlarged and it's not just from gaining weight. I suffer from chronic depression so it's hard to tell if the LEEP affected this but it has been bad for 1.5 years (and the major episodes don't last that long).

Anyone experience these problems and get any actual answers ?

hello white cloud, I just decided to get on the computer to look up side effects of the Leep procedure I had done.  I to have not had a period in two months.  I was getting concerned because I have always had regular periods.  I had the procedure and bled for 15 days straight, then it stopped and I have not had another one. I am showing signs of menopause also and am so tired all the time too. This is not me.  I am so frustrated.  My boyfriend told me not to do it, because my biopsey came back negative. but my doctor wanted to do it anyway.  After the surgery he said they did find some abnormal cells.   Now i am concerned It messed up my chance for me and my boyfriend to try to have children.  I am older than him and he has no children.  If I was not so regular before it would not have been an issue but what are the odds that I would just stop completely?  If anyone else is having this problem please let me know. I am going to get a different gyno to see what my other gyno did to my cervix.  I did have a lot of sluff off from the surgery, more than I thought I should.

Hi White Cloud how are you doing.  you wrote in 2007.I am furious with stupid doctors who do not tell you the truth.  I have been reading many blogs about the leep procedures AND you are not alone.  Yes I agree that HPV is very serious and you do not want to mess around with your health.  But my pap test came back negative and he wanted to do the surgery anyway.  I was put out and I have never been under before.. I was dumb to trust my doctor I should have done my research first.  I had a period Like clockwork every month.  After the Leep I blead for 18 days straight then no period since then and that was May and now it is Dec.  I started having full blown menopause symptoms hot flashes, night sweats.  I have Never even experienced that before.  My twin sisters are both 54 and still have regular periods.  I am 10 years younger.  My mom said she was 59 before she went into menopause.  My doctor wants me to get all the hormone tests done ect.  The weird thing is when I had my 3 month pap last month I bled the next day for one day??? How weird is that.  I feel I have a condition called cervical stenosis.  I read where a lady got this from her leep. Its when the cervix gets scarred and closes.  Your blood from your period cannot escape.  Her hormones were fine.  My boyfreind told me not to get the surgery I wished I would have listened, since my test came back negative.  I should have waited until the next pap.  My boyfriend has never had children and I am older.  And of course my doctor denies it was the Leep.  There has to be a doctor out there who believes us or will tell the truth.  I am going to find a natural gyno they will be more willing to tell you the truth.

Hello Maryz-

I was just wondering if you've had any changes or found out any information since your last post. I too have the same problem you have. I had a LEEP about 3 years ago for HPV and severe cervical dysplasia. I went back for my 3 month follow-up after the surgery and the abnormal cells were still there. I don't know if my Dr didn't get it all out the firt time or if it just re-occured. I went through a second LEEP about 8 months later and have had all normal PAPS since and no HPV. But like you, my periods over the last year 1/2 have pretty much stopped and I have been having depression and hot flashes. I just had bloodwork done and my thyroid is fine but all my hormone levels suggest I'm in menopause. My Dr says I'm really not too young for menopause but I don't agree. And my periods were normal and like clockwork every month until I had the procedure. I'm only 44 and have sisters 2 to 9 years older who are still getting regular periods. My mother didn't start menopause until she was in her 50's! I also have a younger boyfriend who has never had children and I am now dealing with the sadness of knowing I can't have another child. Out of everything I've read about the procedure, it does seem it triggers early menopause. I wish I had known this before I had the sugery, or known about any other options I could have had. A few months ago my gyno checked my vitamin D levels and they were extremely low. She put me on a therapy of 50,000iu once a week for 12 weeks and my count is now normal. I did notice my hot flashes almost completely stopped after 2 weeks of starting the therapy and are much more bearable. You may want to have your Vitamin D checked.  I'm sorry to hear your Dr suggested the surgery, sounds lke you didn't really need it! Alot of times the HPV will go away on it's own, you just have to be monitored every 3 months to make sure the dysplasia isn't progressing. He should have done a colposcopy to see how severe the cells were. I too trusted my Dr and now my whole life has changed.

I had the Leep procedure done 4 yrs ago and have not been able to get pregnant nor have I had a period since. I have had 3 pregnancies total, before the Leep procedure. Two of which were carried out to full term and the third one I had a miscarriage. I've thought all this time it was a normal after effect of having a Leep done for these two things to happen but from what I've been researching tells me different. Does anyone else have info on whether its normal or abnormal? I haven't ever asked my doctor because like I said, I thought it was normal.
