I will be flying from the Midwest to Europe about six and a half weeks after my RAI, and returning three weeks after that.  The radiologist warned me that I may still be radioactive enough to set off alarms in airports at that point, and suggested I get a letter from my endocrinologist to carry with me, just in case.  Has anybody else had any experience with this?  Has the letter worked, or did the radioactivity result in a huge hassle, or what?

Dotty -

I had surgery mid july 2006 then had RAI mid August and a large dose of I131 radiation the week following.  The first part of September I headed to Italy for a few weeks R&R.  I did take a letter from my nuclear medicine dr. with me, but never set off any alarms.  I traveled through three international airports both ways and never had a problem.  I would suggest you take the letter and if anything happens just show it to the airport.  Also, I don't know how you are feeling, but I also had a wheelchair available for the long waiting and walks in the airport.  Just a suggestion.  If this is a vacation - enjoy, relax and live life.........................
