People with multiple mets in the lung only - the best available treatment is with Dr Axel Rolle. This includes lung mets from originally primary sarcoma or breast or other cancers.
My father had a lump on his thigh which was diagnosed as a type of sarcoma - a pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma. He is an architect, and was aged 63 when he was diagnosed, with 4 children (the youngest still at high school at the time). He had the primary tumour resected with good margins, did 10 months of chemo, but the cancer it came back as mets in the lungs, some 3 months after Dad stopped chemo.
He was given a terrible prognosis by his oncologist. Basically around 6 months to live, with little option for surgery or further chemo. (His white cells had plummeted on the first lot of chemo, and most of the more effective types of chemo not subsidised or available in New Zealand, nor did his oncologist think they would have much effect in any case. He was interested in the Yondelis but not available at the time.)
Things were looking very grim. Then I found out about this special laser lung surgery in Germany, pioneered by Dr Axel Rolle. My father's oncologist looked into it independently, pulling all the medical journal articles, and agreed it would be a good option.
He had 16 lung mets detectable on the CT scan, and Dr Rolle regarded that all of them were able to be resected. Dad flew over the next week, and had the surgeries on both of his lungs, which involves a very precise laser frequency which both cuts and seals, meaning that only the smallest amount of tissue is removed with the mets. It is very different from old-fashioned surgery which involves stitches and scar tissue, and cannot be done on many multiple mets as I understand.
In the end, Dr Rolle found a total of 20 and removed them all. Dad is home as of one week ago, healing well, and the CT scan shows no cancer in his lungs.
If his cancer does come back later on in his lungs, he is able to have another surgery. And in the interim some interesting new drugs and treatment options are coming out if it spreads anywhere.
One such drug, Yondelisis proving somewhat effective at keeping some sarcoma mets at bay, as well as other treatment options.
I highly recommend the laser surgery in Germany if it is an option... For people that have cancer elsewhere in his body the they need to have this addressed first as I understand, but Dr Rolle could answer such enquiries. .
The only thing with the German surgery is that you will not have a US doctor recommend it because it is not FDA approved in the USA. IT has been going through the approval stage for nearly 7 years, and is set to be approved at the end of this year, or beginning of next year. It is known about in Europe, and this laser with the specific beam length, called the "er-raser" is available in a number of hospitals in Germany, in Vienna, and I think Italy.
Unfortunately in the US it is something they are not so familiar with, and the doctors get wooed by pharmacutical companies to push the drugs and chemo regimes, so you need someone who can independently read the info about the laser surgery.
While we were there we met with several other International patients (although they mainly treat German patients there of course) who had similarly successful operations that rid them for the time being of the lung mets with this precision operation. Dad was the first from NZ and Australia to have the operation, and it is not known about this side of the world, which I am going to look to remedy.
Dad has gone from having 6 months to live, to no visible cancer at the moment. His doctor is amazed! While there is a chance further mets will pop up in his lungs or elsewhere, we will deal with that scenario when it occurs in the knowledge that new treatments are constantly evolving. And we are enjoying the idea of having a Christmas as a family and smiles.
