I had a port put in the right side of my chest, and I'm having problems keeping it dry. The nurse suggested taping it over with saran wrap but it's not working so well. I'm sure I'm not the only person with this problem. Any tips?

My husband had a port surgically implanted on the left side of his chest back in July 2004. He was not allowed to get it wet because he was receiving chemo treatments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 5 1/2 weeks by a pump he wore in a small fanny pack around his waste. The port was flushed once a week at which time he was able to shower. The port and the area surrounding it were bandaged with a large, semi thick square clear bandage and then each side of the square bandage was also covered with some sort of surgical tape. I'm not sure of what your situation is, but as long as he was not wearing the chemo pump, he was allowed to get the port wet. I hope this is of some help to you.

I have had a port in my right chest, and it is accessed bi-weekly, although weekly for a while. I have always showered with it. I think the problem is when you have it accessed all the time, and I was not aware that was done. Really just wanted to wish you well. Jim H.

Thanx to both of you. I'm also getting chemo through the pump 24/7 which is a problem. They change it every Monday in the hospital and I can't exactly shower there. Judy, when exactly did your husband shower and what did he do the rest of the week? Jim thanx for the good wishes.

Hi Wassa, I also had a port put in, but I do not have any problems keeping it dry. It is under the skin and I do not cover it. Keep the good work up. May God bless you, Norma
