THEY SAY THERE IS NO MORE TO DO NOW SHE IS LOSING WEIGHT RAPIDLY AND WE DONT KNOW WHAT FOODS SHE SHOULD EAT IF ANYBODY HAS ANY INFORMATION PLEASE SHARE IT WITH ME MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS beautifulredhot@yahoo.com THANK YOU CONCERNED FAMILY MEMBER.My Dad has PC and we've been managing weight with lots of protein shakes. I bought one in particular that he likes called "Pro-Complex Gainer," from GNC. I ran the ingredients list by the nutritionist at our hospital here and she thought it was a good option. Over 600 calories when made with water, but we use milk and half and half. My Mom makes it hard for Dad to eat most of the time because she is truly compulsive about cleaning (think 'Adrian Monk') so we got a blender bottle for him too. Works great. He has one or two shakes a day and also drinks Boost Plus (very convenient) in between meals. Fish oils are supposed to help- look them up and see if you find anything more recent than what I have here : "The results of a very interesting study were presented at the recent Pancreatic cancer think tank meeting in Utah (Sept 1999). The meeting was sponsored by the NCI and the Lustgarten Foundation. For patients with pancreatic cancer, profound weight loss will often shorten their survival. The study demonstrated that taking fish oils helped pancreatic cancer patients gain weight. More importantly, these patients ate better and felt stronger. In the laboratory, fish oils appear to block the effects of cancer on muscle breakdown. We also know that several of the compounds that cancers release cause cachexia, a general weight loss and wasting of muscle mass. Blocking the effects of these compounds may ultimately be of further benefit in the fight against cancer cachexia. Fish oil capsules often contain a mixture of compounds. The active compound in this study was EPA (eicopentanoic acid), a compound found in some vegetable oils. Patients in this study took 2g/day in two doses. Generally the medication is well tolerated. Although there have been many other studies looking at fish oils in other conditions with similar doses, it is important to note that these findings needs confirmation in larger studies. Although maintaining weight will usually translate into improved survival, this study is too preliminary to show this yet. The next step for these researchers is to see if taking fish oils could actually improve survival. We need to know if fish oils help or hinder cancer growth. But until such studies are done, patients may wish to try taking fish oil in their efforts to help maintain their weight and strength."We've also found that it's really helpful to always have a bowl of something near his recliner or bed. We glaze walnuts and almonds and mix them with dried fruits and just set the bowl down by him. If we ask him to eat, he says he can't, but if we just put things near him, he picks them up and eats till it's empty. My brother did some research on goji berries or Chinese Wolfberry and thought that may be a superfood- don't know much about that. He's also discovered the joy of popcorn- somehow it doesn't fill him up right away so he eats quite a bit of it and that has truly helped with the constipation from oxycontin, more so than the laxatives I think. We've also done lots of fruit and yogurt smoothies. Fresh pineapple, strawberries, full fat yogurt, etc. Dad 'hates' yogurt- but really doesn't know it's in there so he drinks them down fast. High calorie and nutrition. Finally, I've read so many articles on Green tea - there were over 400 abstracts regarding green tea and cancer studies on www.pubmed.com, that we've been asking Dad to drink that as well for the potential cancer fighting properties. Since it's something millions of people consume regularly and even the 'best' drugs for this lousy disease are fairly ineffective, we're giving it a go. Wishing you the very best as we all muddle through this nightmare-Jackie
