my dad has nets to hip and pelvis. he is not well enough to recieve any treatment and he is battling every day with breathing difficulties and heart failure. as he is not recieving treatment we are wondering how quickly this type of cancer spreads. we dont know if we will have him for weeks months or years. does anyone have any experience of this?

Hi:

My husbands has spread from the kidney, adrenal glands, tumor on top of lung, and spine. God knows where else it is. He hardly eats, his feet and legs are swollen and all he does is sleep. This has been going on for about 1-1/2 months. He was in the hospital for 3 weeks after they stopped the Sutant then was at a rehab facility for 15 days. He couldn't eat the food there but he was able to walk up to 75ft with walker. I took him home thinking he would eat better (homemade food and being in his own enviroment) but he did not improve.  I don't know how long a body can hold out without eating and the cancer eating away at them.  I even started giving him an antidepressant thinking maybe he was depressed but I don't see any improvment.

It is a horrible disease is so sad to see them like this

I really dont know if anyone can figure out a life expectancy with this disease.  My husband was originally diagnosed with a 14 cm right kidney tumor and a 1 cm lung met.  This all occurred feb 2001, the kidney right adrenal gland and wedge of right lower lung was removed march 2001, at that time no other tumors were present.  The following Sept several lesions showed up on ct scan in bilateral lungs, we were sent several places re treatment and trials, we ended up at Graham Brown Center in Louisville and saw Dr Damian Laber, he elected to follow as the new meds were not available and he wanted to see how Ronnie did, nnedless to say for three years he remained stable without treatment but when it raised its ugly head it came back with a vegance.  May 2004 we were on vacation and on the way to the airport he went to shut van door and experienced pain, he thought he had pulled something, a miserable trip.  On bone scan he had mets from cervical 4th veterbrae to coccyx, lesion in the sternum, broke the left hip and left elbow.  He has been treated with radiation both standard and cyberknife, interferon 80 weeks, nexavar and 1 week of sutent.  Although he doesnt have the same quality of life he is contented to just be alive,  four weeks ago he was hospitalized and was so ill they called in the family,  next day after I quesioned by belief in God and told him if he had to go  I would miss him but I would let him go.  My daughter  said mom your scaring him and he agreed with her and 1 hou later he wanted the newspaper.  So I cant say with RCC what to expect but good luck and God bless

my dad found out in nov of 06 he had a 7 cm mass on his kidney and it spread to both lungs and 4 places we tried sutent and things just didn't work out for us at all the Lord blessed him little or no pain and he started to sleep most of the time and then he stopped eating and drinking fluids and that went on for 4 days and he passed the 9th of may after a 6 month battle but everyone is different and i pray things will go well for you sorry to maybe tell you somrthing you really don't need to hear but thats what we faced my prayers are with you

Thank you Dave for keeping us in your prayers. We certainly can use it. I now have my husband home w/the help of Mother Cabrini Hospice. A nurse comes once or twice per week. He is on Morphine but at times is still uncomfortable.  He struggled w/Renal Cell for almost two years and what a fight he put up.  Once he was placed on the Sutant he did a 360. I guess the drug is not for everyone but I sincerely hope the  patients on this drug can tolerate the side effects and receive good results. I have come to terms that once the body becomes so weak and tired and there is a poor appetite is it fair to push them to another drug. Some times we have to just accept the outcome and prayer they are comfortable. He is sleeping most of the day and now having a hard time even swallowing the pills. The hospice nurse will be here tomorrow morning to see if it is best to have him admitted to Mother Cabrini in Manhatten.

I thank you for thinking about us and keeping us in your prayers.

Bernadette

Only God can truly answer your question, but give him all the love and care he needs before that time. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. Richard
