Dog:Need More Info On Making A Very Difficult Decison

Hi everyone, thanks for all of the wonderful information that you guys have posted. My little girl, "Diamond" is 11 years old, we've just found out this week that she might have tcc, she has a large tumor in her bladder. The tumor is not on her uretha or any major parts of her bladder. The doctor thinks we should do surgery as soon as possible. We don't want to do surgery because she is really healthy at this time. She's doing all of the things that she has always done. We took her to the vets office because of the blood in the urine, otherwise it would have gone undetected. Can you guys give me some insight on how quick after the surgery does an animal recover.

Also, my vet told me that medciation treatment would not work on Diamond now because of the tumor is already too big, and she may live only few months without any surgery.

 When are thinking about her quality of life, we are not able to decide whether we should do surgery or not. Her tumor is already too big and  if this surgery cause more problem on her and she will suffer from it.

We have read most of the message here and we noticed the people who did have surgery are only the dogs in the ealy stage detection.

 

Please Please give us your advice, we have schedule her surgery next Tuesday morning

Our 13-year-old dog has had TCC for over 2 years now. He started with 3 tumors that have now grown and joined into one large tumor. We had another ultrasound about 6 months ago and it showed that the tumor is not affecting his urethra, but covers about 1/2 - 3/4 of his bladder. He is not able to hold his urine more than 2-3 hours, so he wears a doggie diaper during the day. His spirit is good – he is happy – enjoys his walks and sleeps alot (he will be 14 in September). He doesn't seem to be in pain. Our vet advised us that surgery is very risky and can cause the cancer to spread. I think it may be OK for younger dogs, or when the tumor isn't large. We chose not to do surgery and treated our dog with Piroxicam and holistic herbs. We took him off all carbs and put him on a raw diet. I was told that Piroxicam isn't the "wonder drug", but they have seen good results on dogs with TCC. You might seek another opinion before you opt for surgery – possibly from a Holistic Vet – if you can find one in your area. Best wishes and my heart goes out to you. It's a rought road. I know that this won't go over well, yet I am simply compelled to say that as I read about the suffering of  young spouses, parents and GOD FORBID, even little children fighting the battle of their lives here, I cannot help but to feel how irrelevant all this is about a pet.

 

I love my animals to death, but when I am considering all my beloved Mother is going through, I cannot believe the money and energy that goes into a pet.

I am an unhappy person.  I am here on a CANCER SITE for Goodness sake, wondering how much longer my 66 year young mother will LIVE!

Yes, I do see a difference between animals and humans.  I am sorry if that bothers you.

I do wish you luck with your dog though.

I sent a private message because this site is to give support and strength to ALL who need it - not to belittle someone because of their love of a pet.   Someday an "animal" used in testing a new drug just may save a humans life.   Not to mention the proven fact that animals play a big role in healing.  I am very sorry for your Mothers cancer.  Don't take it out on others.

I am in NO WAY belittling a pet lover, I simply stand strong in the fact that you can in no way compare an animal to a human being.  When I am reading things about my Mother, to see someone discussing their dog in the same place to me is beyond insulting.

And if indeed you are such an animal LOVER, why is it you support and encourage "ANIMAL TESTING"  ---    I DO NOT!!!!

First I just wanted to convey to you how deeply sorry I am about what you are going through with regards to your mother. I  know only to well what it is like to deal with a cancer patient (father) and lost my mother at 65 years of age. It is very hard and my prayers are with you.

My only thoughts here are that you mentioned in your e-mail about how "irrelevant" the things that people will do for their "pet/animals". To most people on this CANINE website, these furbabies are more than what you labeled them as. They are loving members of their family. I also lost my champion Norfolk in November and there was nothing I would not do for him. God forbid, it could have been one of my human children, but I like to think he was also a member of our family. After 12 years of helping me go through the pain and heartache of losing my parents and always being there for me, I was there for him. I think that is why we are all on this website as it helps ALL of us emotionally.

Sorry but I did not include my response.  was faced with the same decision you have and elected to have the tumor removed from my 11 1/2 yr old Dalmatien. That was just about 1 yr. ago and now my 12 /12 yr. old Dal is doing just fine. With a diet of fish, veggies and a host of supplements all is well knock wood. There is hope.
