Subject: nexavar unknown or not?

Hello

My Mum is going through a really rough time, as are many people. but, as a family, we feel so helpless. She has stage 1v RCC and  has had abdominal drainage of 5 litres last week, but the ascites is building up again and she is having drainage again in a couple of days.Is this a bad sign that it is happening again so quickly? She has to make a decision as to whether to try nexavar when she is feeling stronger, but she knows there are bad side effects with this drug. She was quite positive about tryig it last week, but seems to be reconsidering now.

You mum is in the same boat as the rest of us. Cancer sucks and some of the medicines can make it feel like good old fashion torture. On the other hand, most cancer warriors figure it is better to hurt a little now than not at all forever. There are now several oral medicines for RCC, including Nexavar, Torisel and Sutent. When it come se's Sutent seems to be the least most awful (none of them are any fun). There has also been a recent study that shows that Sutent might actually have a better affect on kidney cancer than Nexavar. If your doc says either is safe, then you can reasonably bet on it. I have done seven rounds of Sutent and no longer have any of the worst SE's. But I will admit that Nexavar just kicked my arse. You can read about my adventures with both on my blog. www.mpablog.typepad.com/david-foster It may look a little overwhelming to get to the right stuff, but there is an internal search engine on the left side of the page. Just search nexavar or sutent and you will see all the posts. Hope this helps. Dave
