I was just wondering if anyone out there has had their Kidney removed after Sutent showed positive results.  My mom has been on Sutent for 2 cycles.  She has had 1/3 shrinkage in a met in her lung and all other tumors have stabilized.  Her oncologist has told us that we can now consider removing the kidney as a form of treatment.

I am wondering what others have experienced with a situation like this.  Having your kidney removed is a huge decision to make, I would hate to help her make a decision while not be informed of what has happened in similar cases.

I personally think it sounds like a great option but is looking at it from a purely emotional stand point and not educated.  Were there any major side effects, would you recommend it to someone else?

I think it is best to remove the primary tumor as soon as medically possible.  Most doctors would advise it I believe.  It sounds like good news that the sutent is working.  I have just finished my first cycle and am so hopeful for similiar results.  Nexavar failed and so did the hd IL2 treatments.  To me it sounds like great news that your mom is responding so well to sutent but getting rid of that tumor in the kidney is essential.  My prayers are with your mom.  Chris from Arkansas

I may be the odd ball in here but I am on my 4th Sutent cycle and the Oncologist has no plans for a kidney removal. They have all shrunk some and some even appear dead (on the Adrenal Gland). I have stage IV RCC and hope I can avoid the kidney removal. If you read a lot of these messages you will find the patient with only one kidney finds a few years later that they have a tumor on the only kidney they have. Now what do you do. Good luck what ever you do and have your Mom keep up a real positive attitude. What ever you decide you must go with it and she must keep saying "I am beating this thing and riding my body of it"

You are in our Prayers

Thanks for all the words of hope and faith.  I will look into this more and see what I can find.  I was concerned because I have only read about patients having the kidney removed and then starting sutent.

I had one kidney removed because there was a large tumor attached to it.Life for me, with one kidney has been normal.  I've also been on sutent for the past year.  It worked as advertised until about 2 months ago.  I start Torisel on Monday with great expectations.

Prior to having the surgery, I sought information on restrictions that might be prudent with only one kidney.  All I was able to come up with was: limit caffeine and alcohol consumption and avoid contact sports.
