removal of the omentum

In April of this year I had my pancreas and spleen completely removed as well as part of my stomach and liver.  I am slowly recvovering, but I have been fighting off an infection since my surgery.

The infection leaks at the center of my incision.  They put two drains in me last week to help drain what they are calling an abcess, but the surgeon and radiologist believe that my omentum has died and will have to be removed to get rid of the infection.

Has anyone else had this happe or heard of this?  I am trying to find information on line, but not having much luck.

Thanks,

I had my omentum removed in Sept. 07, along with a full hysterectomy, and bladder removal and neo-bladder reconstruction. I had a rare and aggressive case of Urachal cancer and the best course of treatment was surgery to remove as much surrounding tissue that could be affected. So far all my follow up scans show no cancer present. I do not notice any difference without my omentum. I was happy to bid it goodbye rather than face cancer in it. I hope your surgery goes well. Lynn
