Subject: More than one cancer.
Date: 07/28/2007
My wife has both Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer. She had a joint operation for both cancers on the same day 3 years ago. Oncology is split into the separate disciplines for each of her cancers and there is no combined approach. As a consequence when she had a relapse last November it was treated as Ovarian. This seemed a reasonable assumption as her CA 125 was elevated. Some metasteses dissapeared some tumours reduced and the CA 125 returned to normal. However, some lesions increased in size and number, effecting both her liver and lungs whilst receiving the Chemo. The Ovarian Oncology team passed her over to the Breast team and despite the fact that liver biopsies failed to differentiate the lesions between the two types of cancer it was decided to treat the growing metasteses as though they were derived from Breast Cancer. The current treatment has almost killed her, so much so that she has decided to call a halt. We are left not knowing the way forward. It would make sense if there could be a joint approach from both of the cancer diciplines yet this has so far not happened. Its either one or the other. The message is if you are going to get cancer please only get one at a time!
