Hi all:

My mom in India has been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer (bone metastasis). She just completed 3rd cycle of Sutent (50 mg). First two cycles she had very little side effects. The third cycle has been bad though. She has small wound (sore) in her rectum. So she has extreme pain when she passes stools. There is also blood in her stools. She also had extreme dry mouth and sore mouth. The doctor here do not have too much experience with Sutent. Could anybody please provide some guidance about what can be done to ameliorate/suppress these side effects?

 Thanks a lot in advance

My husband had sores in his mouth during one of his cycles. The doctor took him off sutent while the sores healed. The healing process was speeded up by using lasers on the sores.  My husband is on cycle 7 and each cycle the side effects are different. Whenever he has hand blisters or mouth sores he stops taking sutent until he heals - doctor's orders.. Good luck.

My husband is about to begin his 3rd treatment and he also has experienced the sores in the mouth and a raw, blistered rectum (along with other side effects).  Unfortunately, the doctors are not very familiar with the sutent, therefore they just document the side effects and we press on.  I have been putting "diaper rash cream" on the rectum area and it seems to help.  He has been using baking soda to clean his mouth  because it does not cause any burning or additional pain.  We think the sutent is causing his gums to recede and have not found anything to stop it yet.  I sure hope you find something for you mom because it's very difficult to see your loved one go through some of these side effects and not knowing what to do for them.  Please check with your doctor before trying the diaper rash cream (if planning on trying) because some things can actually make the condition worse.

Good luck

for mouth sores or soreness, try using a mouthwash called Biotene. it can be found over the counter.
