Barbara-

My 46 yr old girlfriend just finished her Carbo/taxel tratments 6).  You will hopefully be as free of side effects as she. The anti-emetic drug Zofran worked great but if you don't have insurance it would be prohibitive ($33 per pill- 3 per day for first 3 days. There are various programs with the cancer groups that can help financially.  Pam noticed her hair falling out at 14 days after her first treatment, she shaved her head but says she wouldn't have if she had 20-20 hindsight as she thinks it might have just thinned.  It started growing back after the 4th treatment(odd), and is about 1 1/4 inches long now. Her eyelashes went about then, but her eyebrows stayed.  She suggests getting synthetic wigs instead of human hair as it is easier to keep a style, and they do look good.  She has had a lot of stomach and bowel issues but it is more related to her surgery than the cancer itself (adhesion and constipation).  You should get through it just fine.  She did not have any other side effects like mouth or skin issues, and she and I both would say that the most important thing to watch is your weight, hers started to drop, lost 42 pounds from surgery and the aftereffects but we managed to stop it and turn it around before it affected her blood counts and other nutrition markers. She has now gained to a weight of 152 after starting at 184. She only needed 2 procrit shots after the 4th chemo treatment and her Hemoglobin shot back up to normal. She was diagnosed initially with Stage IIIB which appears to have spread to a lymph node in her celiac axis node near her pancreas.  The chemo seems to have knocked it out, waiting for results of a Pet/CT  scan from last Wednesday. Hopefully she is disease-free now.  If yoyu have ANY questions , please contact me. I have become totally immersed in her care and her cancer. She is upbeat and you couldn't tell she was sick by looking at her.  We will both pray for you and think of you. Hang in there.

Rick (and Pam).

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for sharing and for keeping positive, too!

I had my 1st chemo treatment on July 25th and am scheduled for my 2nd on Aug. 15 (1X every 3 weeks for total of 6 treatments).  My chemo cocktail is carboplatin and taxol.  So far, all I experienced were flu-like symptoms  for about 3 days beginning on the 3rd day after chemo.  Then, for about a week, I felt tired.  Today I am feeling great and am sort of wondering if the chemo is 'working'!!!  LOL!  I have faith it is, as I do have aches and pains now and again in my gut area, so I know the chemo is kicking BUTT and fighting those little nasty buggers left behind!  GO CHEMO!

I have been told I will lose my hair, but so far haven't.  That'd be OK, though, as sometimes I just don't feel like styling it and it would be a lot easier throwing on a hat like guys do!!

Keep up the Faith and Blessings to you,

Susie

Hi Barbara,

I am winning my second battle with cancer.  The first being colorectal cancer. 4 1/2 years later, it metastisized to both luungs.  The second bout, I jtook carboplatin.  My hair thinned out but it did not fall out.  So just wait it out and see what happens.  My treatmentis over now, and half of my hair is about 12 inches long, and the other is bout two inches long.  Nice look!I took pre-meds before the carboplatin that really prevented me from having nausea.  I did not lose much weight and I tolerated the 5 FU and Carboplatin very well.  Blood counts were good throughout and I had 8 rounds, over 7 months.  SO, hang in there!  You can get through this and you'll be stronger than ever.  You'll be in my prayers and pray for me as I go back to M.D. Anderson tomorrow for PT/CT scans following my two lung surgeries.

Take care,

Deborah

Dear Rick,

Your post was inspiring to me and I thank you for that!  I hope Pam is in remission, it sounds as if she will be.  You are both in my prayers,

Susie
