jaundiced? help, now what is happening?

My mom is stage 4 pc, has been fighting for 3 years now.  Has not has chemo for 14 months, she is in the care of hospice.  Just in the last few days she has become very jaundiced.  The nurse is coming today and they never really tell me anything, so I am asking for help on this board. I know that things are coming to the end, now.  She is down to 78 lbs and her stomach and her legs are swollen, from  fluid.  She still lives by herself and we check on her a couple of times a day. She is very tough, but I am wondering if this is the beginning of the end?  Can anyone help me?

I'm  sorry to say, but it seems as though the liver is failing, causing the jaundice, and that is the beginning of the end.

I'm also sorry to hear that the hospice care she is receiving is not more informative to you.  They can really give you a much better picture of what Mom is going through right now that I can.

Try to contact the nurse that sees your Mom.

Best to you.

most likely the jaundice is obstructive in nature from the tumor pressing on the common bile duct.  At any rate the ascities and jaundice are not good prognostic indicators.  At 14 months she has already outlived the average so its hard to say.  I agree hospice should be more helpful in this regard.

Hi There.  Sorry to hear that you are going through this. I know that death can be difficult thing to prepare for, especially if you are not informed. The following is a link that may help you understand what to expect. I wish I had, had it when I went through it with my father.  It was taken from a hospice site and is referenced as it is a good site.  Thinking of you.

There are several articles but the first is more to your needs I believe.
