My father had stage IV stomach cancer. He was diagnosed in december, had chemo, then surgery (removal of stomach), then more chemo and radiation. It was a long and a hard battle as some of you know. My dad stopped eating some time ago because that would trigger him throwing up bile. He was getting worse with each week. We started to give him nutrition through the port and he was able to regain some of his weight. My mom, him and I went on a 2 week vacation to California. We thought we should spend time together before something else happens. I also thought the trip would give my dad some hope because he was getting extremely depressed. Throughout the trip my dad's feet started to swallow up. Per doctor's suggestion we used compression socks to promote circulation. He continued to be very tired and didn't walk much at all. When he did walk, he would get out of breath very fast. Towards the end of the trip, his whole legs were swallowed. Our last stop was San Francisco (last thursday) and we went to do a blood test for the company that produces liquid nutrition (TPN) for my dad. On Friday, they told me to go to the hospital because my dad's kidney levels were high. We checked into emergency room and after some tests they found out that he had blood clots in his legs. I didn't know this, but cancer patients are much more prone to develop blood clots...Then they put him on blood thinners and said that he needed to stay in the hospital for couple of days. We were supposed to fly back on saturday and decided that i would go back home and my mom would stay with my dad until he checks out. On saturday and sunday, they continued giving him blood thinners. On Monday morning my dad had trouble breathing, so they took him to ICU and put put a tube down his throat and started to run the tests. They found out that he had blood clots in his lungs as well. His heart rate was high (140), his kidneys were failing, and after couple of hours, he died. I couldn't believe it...all doctors were shocked...My mom was there with him and I was back home in New York. We don't know why he really died and we decided against autopsy since we need to transfer his body back to New York as fast as we can. So, I just wanted to let everyone know what happened to him and that you should check with your doctor about blood clots and if you or your family member is at danger of developing them. It seems that is what killed him! At least, we were able to share the trip before he passed away. Try to spend as much time with your family because that is the only thing that matters. Death can take anyone so suddenly...

Thank you for your info. My mom was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer, had surgery to remove the cancer but could not due to the fact that it had spread, her feet have begun to swell. She never ever had swollen feet, even while pregnant. I will ask the doctor about blood clots. Thank you and I am very sorry for your loss.

Hi all,

My dad is fighting stomach cancer last stages right now, he had got swollen legs and found blood clot in one of his legs artery. Doctors started off with blood thinners and he wears a leg pullups not sure what they are called. This cured his swellings. But now he is loosing lots of blood in his urine as the cancer had spread to his liver.

This is a good suggestion to everyone out there, to consult with your doctors about blood thinners for cancer patients and also to monitor kidneys. Kidneys and Liver are the critical organs close to the stomach for the spread.

Hope someone finds a cure soon. May God be with us all in our tough times.
