Subject: Hair loss during chemotherapy
Date: 08/18/2007
My mom was just recently diagnosed with stage2/3 breast cancer in January. Just recently she had a radical mastectomy of her right breast and a partial lumpectomy on her left. Two weeks ago she started chemotherapy and just like they said her hair has started to fall out. My question to anyone out there experiencing this now or has is what can be done about the pain associated with the hair loss. It has been almost three weeks now since her first treatment and sure enough her hair is starting to fall out. She is in so much pain..She is complaining about her scalp burning and very sensitive to touch.  What if anything can she do to ease this pain?  I would appreciate any type of help. My mom is 74 and is not very computer savvy so I am doing a lot of research for her online. I came upon this site just by searching and am thankful for it.... I look forward to any response..

I went through this four years ago. The pain associated with the hair loss will lessen and then dissappear. I'm thinking it took about six weeks. I always thought it felt like someone had pulled my hair really hard. I shaved my head when I had lost more hair than I had left. I can't remember if that helped with the pain, but it was easier to look in the mirror. Hopefully, it won't be long before the physiological pain of hair loss goes away. Good luck.

Thank you so much for responding to the email.. It has been awhile now since I first posted. My mom is just about bald now. The pain is gone. She has minimal hair left. She went for her second treatment and is due to have her 3rd in about a week or two. She goes once every three weeks. She seems to be responding well to chemo. She feels tired, and gets loose bowel movements, but before she had found out about the breast cancer she had to have a colostomy. So ........ Her spirits are up and she is very encouraged. Thank you again for responding. I appreciate it very much.

A great inspirational speaker to check out is Wayne Dyer.  Just hearing that man's voice can make me smile on my worst days!
