Subject: What is Best Eating Plan Without a Stomach
Date: 02/09/2005
I was diagnosed with stomach cancer December 2003 and had a total gastrectomy (stomach, spleen, and part of the pancraes was removed) on 12th January 2004. This was followed by Chemotherapy which went on until early August and I experienced various infections in between sessions. My weight fell from 70 to almost 45 kilos and it has since gone up to about 56 kilos. My doctor has warned me that it will be difficult to put on much weight. I am currently on no medication other than a B12 injection every month and I have no special diet except that I have been told to eat whatever I want but preferably in smaller quantities but more frequent. So far I have had some reaction to certain foods, I suffer from gases and my bathroom routine has changed.
I would appreciate any information on a similar case where a more firm balanced diet is being followed to ensure a balance nutrition and better control of the digestive system and bathroom routine.

My last control tests were in December 2004 and so far all is well.

Thanks for any information.

Hi Carlos, Your doctor was right. You can eat what ever you want. When you find foods that bother you, avoid those. As far as putting weight back on. Eat food that are high carb and high protien. Stay away from raw veg. They can cause gas also low in calories. My husband had a partial stomach removal. He went from 185lb. down to 153lb. Within 1 1/2 months after his surgrey I had him back up to 173lb. 9 months later. 181. I would fix all his favorite foods. and one by one we would see which he could tolerate. During his chemo treatments all spices bother him. Also try a tongue scapper. Helps alot when food has lost flavor for you. He ate breakfest, lunch and dinner. And between those he had 3 snacks. Avoid drinking fluids with your meals. You don't want to fill up on fluids. But besure to drink plenty of fluids between meals. For snacks I made fruit shakes for him with carnation instant breakfast, icecream and fruit. Such as bananas, blueberries, and strawberries. What ever fruit you like. He loves Flan. Ha ha. Rice pudding. All that good stuff most people avoid so they don't gain weight. You don't have that problem any more. Enjoy. Eat what ever you want. I have read where some people say alot of surgar bothers them. Surgar doesn't bother my husband. Black pepper does. His weight has top off now at 170 to 175. 3 meals and 2 snacks now. Doing good. Full of energy. It's been a year and half now. Think positive and on those days you don't feel like eating. Force yourself. Your mind will say no, But remember your body needs it. All the best to you. Your in our prayers. Sharon

Hi Carlos,
I was diagonsed with stomach cancer on October 2003. I had total removal of stomach, spleen, and many lymph nodes on November 2003. I have gone to eight chemo and I will go for the next one March 2005. So far I am free of any cancer. I eat everything and I don't have that much problem with gas. The key I find out is that I drink before I eat. I like hot tea so I drink it with sugar before I eat. I lost about 50 pounds due to cancer, surgery, and chemo. I have gained back about half of that. My previous problem of high cholosterol and higher lipid is now normal. I feel realy well and my sprit is very high. I am back to my work but I do feel sometimes tired. I have a low blood pressure and that is the only medicine I take. I have B-12 shot every six months. Do the best you can. Respond and let me know how are you doing. I am a 52 year-old male.

Thanks

Hi everyone, I am writing this in desperation for my wife. Please if anyone can give me some advise I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!!!
My wife went through Bariatric surgery. She was told she was too heavy, even when she was only 215 lbs. During the surgery the doctor ended up sewing her esophagus closed against her stomach. This was discovered within 5 hours when the surgeon realized that my wife could not swallow anything, even here saliva. An emergency surgery was performed and the doctor ended up sewing her esophagus straight to her Jejunum,(Her throat to her intestine) pushing her stomach to the back of her body. Apparently by having done this, the stomach was totally destroyed and unfixable.
Some would say that this was done at a butcher shop hospital but actually it was done at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak MI., A highly credited hospital in the country.
After spending 5 mo. On a picc line I ended up taking my wife to University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor MI.(Ranked 9th in the US) where they fixed the all the problems they could.
Whats done is done and our whole lives have now changed, I am trying to get my wife to eat with no stomach now and it’s becoming a task. Even the doctors at University of Michigan Medical Center are confused why she cannot hold the food down. All the tests say that’s it a clear path now. She is even on anti-nauseous medicine.
Mary says that’s not working to well either.
Getting to the answers I DESPERATLY SEEK.
My wife has gone from 165 lbs to 125 lbs. even when she’s trying to eat. She says she has extreme lower pain after eating. NO MATTER what she eats. Even if it’s little bites and little portions, even shakes.
She throws up most of it after about an hour.
I will be willing to talk to anyone and call anyone for informational help.
Most Doctors will not even see her because of what the original doctor did.
Most doctors I talked to will not take someone else’s screw up.

Can someone please talk to me or give me a number I can call for help and info.

My name is Cliff C., I will call you anywhere or please call me or email me.
