Hiccups after whipple?

My dad is suffering from hiccups constantly since first day of eating.  Also, he tends to vomit a couple of hours after eating.  Is this normal?  He had the Whipple a week ago this past Friday and everything has been moving along so perfectly well that this new thing is making us nervous.

If it IS normal, how long does this side effect seem to last?  He isn't in any pain to speak of, but, he IS annoyed as hell at the hiccups.  Hard to eat when they are constant.

Thanks a bunch!

sorry to hear about the hiccups.  it's not a good sign.  my mom had that and it was a symptom that the cancer was still there.  I remember her with the hiccups for a since march 2007 and she passed away in june 2007.   i hope I'm wrong though.  get all the questions you want to ask your loved one and let your loved one know how much you love them.  good luck.

Hi, I think I have written you before. I am glad your dad made it threw surgery. I do not know about hiccups, but your doctor should know. I went to Mayo Clinic and they have information on their website.  I would ask your doctor or keep researching.  As far as the vomit, I was doing normal, as normal can be after surgery, starting eating, then a couple days later took a turn for the worse, and started vomitting.  I could no longer eat and they put the tube back down my nose.  Finially,  a little over a month I stopped throwing up.  Keep asking, and good luck.  Dawnella

If you've not done so, please continue to consult with your physician about the hiccups.  My son had then at various times during treatment.  There are different medications they can try to stop or relieve them.

OK...I like everyone's answers except thereishope's....sorry!  Love ya still, though.  I spoke face-to-face with a 34 yr. Whipple survivor (he had it in '74) and he said he had the same problem.  That it is something with the diaphragm settling back into place.  Dad was only stage IIB at surgery, so, I am going to keep the hope going!

Anyone else know anything?

And yes, they give him a pill for trying to control the stomach spasms.....it helps for a few hours, but he is only on it every 6.  If he could have it every 4 he would probably be fine and able to eat.  Going to talk to the DR. about that.
