My dad has a neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas with spread to the liver. I sent all my dad's scans to UPMC for an opinion with Dr. Geller and Dr. Gamblin.  They suggested chemoembolization of the liver to be done soon.  Has anyone had this procedure there and what is your opinion.  How are you doing?  How many treatments did you need?  What about the pancretic tumor itself?  Please let me know.  Thank you.

My husband just returned home last night from having chemoemblization under the care of dr. Gamblin.  This is his third treatment for choangiocarcenoma. He has multible tumors in the left and right lobes of his liver.  He was diagnosed aug. 2006.  We tried systemic chemo and it helped for a time, But then i found umpc.  Greatful to find dr. Gamblin. Afer seeking help at all the other cancer hospitals and talking with the doctors he was the only one who said come, and let me try to help ed.  He is hopeful to put the breaks on this type of cancer which is not cureable.  The hospital and his staff are extreamly careing and attentive to all your needs.  Best wishes , elaine

I faled to answer your questions about how he is doing. It is expected after treatment with the drugs of gemzar, cisplatin, and spheres to be very tired, this will last about 10 to 15 days.  Sometimes his appetite is poor and we have him drink supplements. Sometimes he experiences night sweats.  Occotional constipation, but all this is treatable.  He takes a 3 week health leave from work,  he has has a desk job, computer analist so there is mental not physical drain sometimes.  I adjust our lives accordingly.  He is 58 years old and this hit our family very hard.  Contant readjusting and making the best of each day.

Although my husband had colon cancer and not PC, he had mets to the liver and underwent chemoembolization.  No one warned us that it can cause serious damage to the galbladder.  He became extremely sick and was in horrible pain.  I took him to the ER, but they did nothing but sent him back home.  He continued to get worse and it was finally determined that the chemoembolization "killed" his galbladder and by the time it was detected, it was gangreen and he was at risk for sepsis.  His galbladder was removed and he had tubes to drain the infection.

I later found a website that said this is a risk of chemoembolization, which I wish I had found earlier.

Be sure to read everything you can get your hands on to be informed.  Don't rely on the docs to tell you everything you need to know.
