I recently had a TT on 8/07/07. I was put on calcium post op for two weeks. As I started to wean off, I had symptoms of low calcium. I was told to stay on the calcium one more week and then try to wean off again. However, before I could even start trying to wean off the calcium, I started having more symptoms of low calcium - lab work showed it to be 7.4 with an ionized level of 4.3. So, now I am on a higher dose of calcium and vit D. But, I still feel funny - tingly and twitchy sometimes. Just wondering, to those of you who have also had trouble with calcium after surgery - do you constantly feel funny? My hands and feet are always falling asleep. I am trying to figure out when to be concerned and when to let it go....whats normal for recovery post TT and whats not? Thanks in advance for your replies.

I had the same problem.  My levels dropped to 7.0.  It can take a good month for your levels to improve and symptoms to subside.  My surgery was on 7/31/07 and the symptoms that you describe are just subsiding.  Continue to take calcium, about 600 mg. every couple hours and as you experience symptoms.  Take with Vit. D.   Also my endo ordered Calcitricol (prescription med) which has helped to boost my levels up to near normal.  You should also continue to get your blood calcium levels checked until it takes an up swing.  When I would feel symptoms I would just pop a calcium tablet, I also carried them with me, even though your body can only absorb 500 to 600 normally in a single dosage when experiencing symptoms your levels are off so just pop l or 2.  My surgeon said you can't overdose as your body will just pass the extra through your kidneys so drink plenty of water as well.
