I actually have an appointment with the doctor today but I wanted to see if anyone here could offer some insight. I had a biopsy done of a right nodule last monday. The week before that I had blood work done where I did the normal thryoid tests and in addition to that they did a tumor marker and antibodies test (these both came back abnormal). When I talked to the nurse on the phone yesterday she said that there was atypical lymph cells present but that the test itself was non diagnostic. I am a medical assistant and everything in my training points to it either being a tumor or cancer. I am afraid that I am going to go in today and she is going to make be do the FNA again which I will refuse to do because it was incredibly painful and obviously inconclusive. Has anyone had a similar experience or can anyone offer some advice. Anything at this point would be greatly appreciated!

I am sorry you are going through this.  You are probably gone to your dr. appt. by the time I am able to send this note.  I too had an inconclusive biopsy.  The first time the dr. didn't even numb my neck or anything and I drove myself.  I was ready to shoot him when I was done.  I also had a very large cyst that they drained.  A couple months later the cyst filled with fluid again and a surgeon decided to have another biopsy done.  This time I was numbed and yes it hurt like hell again.  But unfortunately this one came out cancer.  I am glad I went in for the second test cause my thyroid was total cancer with lymph node involvement.  This all started in January 2006 and one and a half years later I am still struggling, but doing better.  I wish you all the best.  No matter what your outcome you have a place here to ask questions and vent.  Please reply.

Hello: I had two inconcolusive FNA's. In fact, after the 2nd the doctor who performed it said there was no possible way it could be cancerous. My endocrinologist wasn't completely comfortable and I ended up having a 3rd- which resulted in the need for surgery. It wasn't until after the thyroid was removed did they determine it was cancerous.

I hope that all works out for you. Feel free to e-mail if you have any questions. Best of luck.

Thank you for your kind words and support. The doctor that I went to today was very rude and did not answer any of my questions. She kept contradicting herself. I am going to get a second oppinion as soon as possible. She told me that I could wait three to six months and then they would look at it again. Thanks again for your thoughts I really appreciate it!!!
