Subject: Side effects of thyroid medication.

I just have a question about side effects of thyroid medication.  I had a TT on 4-11-07 for papillary cancer.  I went through the RAI in June '07.  I started taking 150 mcg of Levoxyl shortly thereafter.  I went in for labs about 6 weeks later and my Endocrinologist upped the Levoxyl to 175mcg daily.  My hair has started falling out in big chunks. I'm not balding or anything, but I have never lost this much hair before.  When I was between my TT and the RAI I was off my meds for a few weeks and my hair was not falling out like this. I am also experiencing swollen ankles and hands, not bad, but enough for others to notice.  Is anyone else having these same side effects from Levoxyl or any other thyroid replacement?  Thanks in advance.

Pam

Hi Pam, I had two surgeries for removal of throid in Feb. and March-had RIA the last of May and started my synthroid on the first of June.  I started out on 137 but after my first blood work the dr. increased it to 150.  My hair has been falling out since March-have told this to the dr. several times and he just acts as if were nothing.  Last month when I was in his office he assured me it was not from the synthroid-said maybe from the RIA.  I will have little hair left if this continues.  I have posted this question about the hair loss several times on the message board-and some complain about the loss of hair and other just say it will get better.  NOT SO FAR.  Ann

Hi! I had a TT in 1-06 but thankfully turned out not to be cancer. It was a very large growth wrapped around just about everything. I left the hospital on levoxyl 150 mcg. They checked my bloodwork every 4 weeks and at this point I am on 325 mcg but changed to levothyroxine and have the thickest head of hair. People comment on it all the time. I wonder if your dose isn't right or if it could have been the rai therapy. Good Luck to both of you!
