My brother has stage IV EC with met to liver.  He hasn't been forthcoming with any info but his daughter is finally keeping me posted.

He has had 2 rounds of chemo and has been walking around Walmart everyday.  He has even golfed.  Just golfed Labor Day Weekend.  Tues the results of cat scan came back.  The tumor in liver is growing instead of shrinking.  Doc said he has 2 choices...let nature take its course and do nothing.....or try a last ditch effort with another kind of chemo.  He chose the chemo.  He asked if they had success with this chemo and she said occasionly.

I'm wondering why they didn't offer him this chemo in the beginning.  Does anyone know what kind of chemo they are refering to?  My neice doesn't know the name of the chemo treatment.

Our elderly mother (88) lives with me and she doesn't know this yet because of her health problems.  At his stage about how long does he have if the new chemo doesn't work.

I'm just sick inside, as I know all who are on the board are.  I pray for everyone on this board when I say my prayers at night....

Is your brother open to getting a second opinion? That all sounds alittle fatalistic on the part of his doctor.

Is his doctor an oncologist/specialist? Does he understand esophageal cancer? Is he affiliated with a cancer group of some kind?

How hard it must be for you to get this info second hand..is there a way to open the lines of communication with your brother directly? Is there a way you can approach him by letting him know you are doing research and that you want to assist him in anyway you can?

It is so hard to get someone to open up when a thing as terrifying as cancer, especially this form, slams into their lives. My husband closed down the first few months and I slowly was able to open him up to talk about what was going on in his mind. He expressed he felt if he didn't talk about it it wasn't happening, and he was stll in control of his life.

My heart goes out to you as I know you must be worried and frightened to lose him.

Take care and I hope you can get more information,

why MD
