I just wanted to put this out there for anyone who has a comment.  I'm preparing for RAI on 9/11.  I stopped my Cytomel on 8/29/07 and started my diet on 9/3/07.  Had blood work on 9/4/07 and scheduled for another on 9/10/07 but had a message on my answering machine from my endo's office that my blood tests showed I was ready to start my iodine therapy.  I was very surprised considering I had only been off Cytomel for a day short of one week and had just started the diet the day before the blood work was done.  Is this unusual??  Actually I have been feeling pretty well up to this point.  Notice stairs are a problem (tired legs) and some muscle ache in my back.  Was cranky for a day and a half and of course some additional tiredness but consideing what I had read I almost though it wasn't working until I got the phone call.  Of course, I still have the weekend and Monday to go, Tuesday is the treatment and things could change after treatment but again has anyone else experienced this??  I worked today for 6 hours, of course, my job has me sitting most of the day on the phones etc.  I guess I expected worse at this point.

For me the worse came right before the end of the second week after being off the Cytomel.  They did not test my levels until a couple of days shy of the full two weeks.  The endo told me that they were shocked at how high my TSH levels were so early on.  TSH was at 127 when normal range is 1.0 to 5.4.  She told me that this was a good sign that it reached so high so quickly because that meant that most of the thyroid tissue had been removed during the surgery.  This would mean that the RAI would have a higher success rate of removing all the remaining tissue.

Thyca.org has great low iodine recipes if you need something new to eat over the weekend.

Good luck!

Thanks!  I didn't know anything about the numbers, what was good or bad but maybe I too responded so quickly for the same reason, I sure hope so.  Today it is Saturday, have another blood test for I think the thyroglobulin level level on Monday and then the RAI on Tuesday.  I have theatre tickets for tommorrow night that I was going to change but being that I'll be sitting I still feel well enough that I might be able to take in the show.  Thanks again!

Did your endo give you a list of foods to avoid instead of being so general like mine. No seafood, certain breads have iodine, ect.

Yes, my endo's office gave me a list of foods to avoid and foods I could have.  Also on www.thyca.org there is a low-iodine cookbook with recipes. I haven't had any problem with dinners but breakfast and lunches have been somewhat of a challenge but only 2 more days for me.  Come Thursday lunch I can try all food stuff again, hope I can taste it.  Today, at the hospital getting my first dosage of pills I had an hour to get something to eat. Got a fruit salad and a cup of coffee but right next to that was the freshest looking kaiser roll with who knows what kind of meat and cheese on it, didn't matter, boy did I just want to sink my teeth in that but soon!
