Subject: Question about melanoma
Date: 09/22/2007

I have a relative who had a melanoma removed from her back.  It was rather deep but a long story short she was told ultimately that they had gotten it all.  Recently curiously one of the fingers on her hand became swollen.  She attributed it to a spider bite and was given some wide spectrum antibiotics.  It appeared at first to go away but over the past couple of days the swelling is still there and today she said there is now a lump on her red swollen finger.  I guess worrier that I am I am beginning to think what if this is related to the original melanoma on her back?  Would a lump related to melanoma present itself on a finger?   Wouldn't it be more likely IF lumps are related to melanoma that she would feel a swelling or lump elsewhere like an armpit?  I thought well, maybe a lump related to that initial melanoma which they gave her a clean bill of health on now has reared its ugly head and appears on her finger.  Is this possible?

My understanding is that melanoma can rear it's ugly head at any time in any place (on the body).   It is also my understanding that only 1/3 of stage 3 paltients will never have a recurrence.  There seems to be no rhyme nor reason with this beast of a disease.

my sister just passed away from Melanoma, they NEVER did find the entry wound, but Melanoma can get in through the eyes, mouth, vagina or anus.  It's deadly once it gets in the organs, yes they can keep a patient alive longer, but the end results are usually the same, death, so I say to any one that has a family member w/ Melanoma stage 3 or 4 , love them with all your might.
