I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2003. My husband is self-employed and we had just ordered new health insurance because my COBRA was ending. The plan was woefully inadequate to cover my surgeries and treatment.
As a result, we were plunged into debt and simply unable to get any other insurance because of my condition. Once I finished radiation, I tried for over a year to get another insurance policy that would help us if I had a reoccurence...to no avail. I tried to get some financial assistance to pay off the many doctors, hospital and labs...to no avail. They said we made too much money. What a joke. The state we lived in didn't "participate" in a high risk pool. If we had stayed with that current insurer, we would be completeley broke within a year (their deductible was $4,000 up to 3 times a year...per confinement; not on an annual basis).
We changed our life. We moved and my husband is re-starting his business in another state. It's tough going and we still owe thousands and thousands of dollars and as yet have no income coming in.
Has anyone else experienced the type of health insurance that we had? And if so, what did you do about it?
