Greetings,

My Dad was diagnosed with EC a couple of months ago.  He has one tumor at the bottom of his esophagus and two lymph nodes.  He is currently on the track of a 28 day session of radiation coupled with two rounds (one at the beginning and one at the end of radiation) of a four day continuous chemo.

My question is this... he is experiencing hiccups everyday.  Some are very serious.  They can keep him up at night and he is exhausted from them.  Has anyone experienced hiccups or know of anything,

Thanks,

Tracy

Hi Tracy -

My dad who is suffering from Stage IV colon cancer is also battling these horrible hiccups - He has had them on and off (mostly on) for several months.  His doctor has him on Thorazine but it has not seemed to help him.  He has these spells where the hiccup won't "come out" and he literally cannot breath for a few seconds.  Almost instantly when he is able to release the hiccup he gets sick - I know how frustrating this is for your dad especially since I see my dad go through the same thing.  Another lady on the colon cancer message board said her husband was put on Compazine and it really helped him - We are going to see if this is something my dad can switch to instead of the Thorazine.  Maybe it is something that might help your dad also -  Best wishes to you and your dad and please let me know if find a "cure" for these frustrating hiccups!!

It is my understanding as a layperson that the hiccups are a by-product of the tumor.  My patient had unbearable, painful hiccups.  He finally received a muscle relaxer Rx that knocked them out.  He has minimal problems with hiccups today.

Tracy,

My husband suffered from incessant hiccups after taking an appetite enhancer medicine during his bout with kidney cancer.  We tried every technique to get rid of them that we could think of. Relief came from an unlikely source: Nexium.  Yes, the purple pill worked wonders and we were very grateful.  It quieted that area, which I guess is all that was needed.  This solution was passed on to me by my daughter-in-law, who took part in a message board (don't know if was this site or another). This shared info is very helpful, and I'm glad I can pass this one as it was passed on to us.  Hope this is definitely helpful to you.

My hubby has metastic bone cancer, and is now terminal.  He suffered from hiccups terribly - they would last for hours.  I did some research and found the gabapentin is used to treat them.  Mentioned it to his palliative care doctor who did in fact agree that gabapentin is used to treat hiccups.  Perhaps this would also work for others.

Hi Tracy,

I am going thru chemo for bladder cancer.  I had Cisplat and Gem 16 month ago and now back with MVAC as a second run.  I had the hickups then and now.  I got COMPAZINE [generic PROCHLOROPER] and it helps. Ask you doctor about it.

Hi tracy

My dad had stomach cancer and had his stomach removed.  After the op he had severe hiccups which took his breath like your dad.  He had fluid under his diaphram removed and they stopped.  Also a drug laragactal helped.  Hope this helps

What's a muscle relaxer Rx? Many thanks.
